Paul pointed out error within the legitimate churches at the time, he tried to prevent corruption and false doctrine from within.
Thus is the difference here.

Paul reminded saved people about the false practices of their former religions. Paul also taught unsaved people why their religions are false. Of course, given the people in our own audiences we can assume that Paul's audiences were also a mix of saved and unsaved.

You have very narrow view of the purpose of believers coming together.

Thanks for that narrow opinion of me that you have apparently gained by reading 3 posts of mine here????
Wow.

Wednesday night prayer meeting is hardly the time when most visitors come to visit a church. It is usually a highly informal setting with only the die hard membership in attendance coming.

I see it as a great evening to deal with these issues. IF you don't like the preaching just stay for the meal and prayer and then leave. No one forces you to stay.

NRB, I am with you. Are the folks at your church having difficulty with false religions? Are the JW's, Mormans ans Scientologists causing trouble at your church? If they aren't why preach on it? Folks don't need to learn about how false religion is false they need to hear about Christ. You prepare people to deal with false religion by teaching them the true Gospel of Christ. The Gospel of Christ, His person and work, applies to every situation and circumstance. When folks are grounded in Him they are prepared for all that comes their way. Worship is about Him not about telling folks how others are wrong. If you want to guard folks from false religion teach them about Christ. Knowledge of Him will keep them from all harm.

No the mormons and JW's are pretty much non existent from what I can tell. The week he's teaching on Scientology and next week it's Islam, and then the New Age stuff.
It's nuts that this is such a waste of time IMHO.
I asked some of my fellow congregants about JW's and Mormons, and well there IS NO mosque/Islam in this part of the deep deep south that anyone would notice anyway. Most of the house to house evangelism is from Baptists. lol
I agree...the best defense of false religion is TRUE teaching on Christ our Lord.
Amen.

My pastor is teaching a summer series on wednesday nights called "False Religions".
He's talking about JWs, Mormons, this week Scientologists, who knows what others later.
I am concerned that this is way too trivial to be taught as an official wednesday series here, when he could be doing teachings on many more relevant things like Grace!(Last summer was a series on Salvation which was excellent!)
It just suprised me.
Thoughts?

Thanks for listening.

I would love to attend Wednesday night services like this. So many in the church are ignorant to these false religions. In the mean time when you learn about the false religions you learn what the Biblical truth is. So you get the best of both worlds.

I think it is great. What if you were to meet a Mormon or a Scientology follower? How can you ever be able to intelligently have a conversation with them. I guarantee you they know all about our beliefs we need to have the knowledge to discuss the differences and show them that Jesus is the only way. Otherwise, they will be turned off immediately. This I have learned from personal experience. We need the knowledge to be able to understand where they are coming from so that we may most effectivle share the grace of the Gospel. Begin a conversation with a non-believer with a respectful knowledge of their beliefs and a door is opened. Go in with only what you know to be true and never so understanding and you will have nothing more than a turned off and tuned out person. I believe we worship God through our sharing His love and message. Be prepared. Know all there is.

LOL I studied them in my search for true christianity to begin with when I left the RCC.
I know how to handle them. :)

The fact of the matter people is this:
I never said it was a bad idea to have this sort of thing.
TO HAVE IT AS A WEDNESDAY NIGHT WORSHIP SERVICE is what I've got the problem with...I believe I stated that clearly in the OP...I'll go back and check.

As others have said Wednesday is normally a members only night with not nearly the people there that are there on a Sunday morning or even a Sunday evening service. People need to wake up the reality of the false religions around them. I hear people try to witness to Muslims or Mormons that don't know the first thing about those religions and they look foolish to say the least. You may know all there is to know about these religions but others need to know so they can witness to them without putting God's name to shame. Did you know that TD Jakes teaches a false God, one that isn't a trinity, but yet Southern Baptist Churches have invited him in to talk? With lessons like these they also will get a better foundation of the essentials if these lessons are taught properly. That would include grace and etc. You never did address this point of my post. Class is OK but if more of the church can get this teaching the better. The only problem I would have is if this was a long drawn out teaching on Sunday morning. I believe a pastor should go through entire books of the Bible small bits at a time and give an expository sermon on your typical Sunday morning. What concerns me is your strong reaction to this lesson. It makes me believe there might be something more to this then what your sharing.

I don't care what normally people think....it's on the MAJORITY of baptist church signs I've seen all over this country....Wednesday night (time stated) Worship service , or in some cases Bible Study...which this is not.

And sorry but a 1 hour teaching session on Islam does NOT qualify anyone to even THINK about confronting a muslim concerning what you are talking about.

thanks.

You seem to just want to vent on this thread and not converse. I say this because you once again avoided my point that these type of lessons can be a great way to teach the proper views of things such as grace. I'll let you be and wish you well. It isn't healthy though spiritually or physically to hold these emotions in. You really need to talk to the pastors of your church about this. You may get the same answers as you have heard and don't be surprised at this. If this is such a big deal I'm sure you'll be able to find a church that doesn't teach on cults on Wednesdays. Of course it can be tricky to even find a church that has any kind of adult service on Wednesday nowadays.

I disagree.
It's a great opportunity to confuse the crap outta someone walking into it as a visitor.
Just MHO again.

So how many visitors do you get on Wednesday evenings? If this was on Sunday mornings, I would be concerned....but it seems very appropriate for wednesday eves, as from my experience it was only the more involved members who showed up for Wed. eve prayer services.

I would have appreciated that type of teaching as I had to look it up myself - and have come across some REAL good Mormon missionary types It would have been nice to be better forewarned. Same with teachings like universalism.

May not arm them to confront - but it is a start. It should help parents explain to their children why a religion is wrong.

It's people who carry strife and contention into the church that causes splits. I'm not implying anything by that, by the way. I just know that it only takes one person who is unhappy with the program to cause problems. Even though a person may not be voicing his/her opinions to anyone else in the church, it's obvious something is wrong because the atmosphere has changed. And sometimes, depending on the fellowship of The Holy Ghost within each person, you can usually tell who has something going on with them. I said I don't mean to imply anything by this, but like the preacher told someone before..Does the shoe fit?

Our Wed night isn't a "worship service", it's a "Bible study" (maybe not so different but that's how it's billed ;) ), a few of the die-hards gathered around some tables with open bibles studying with a leader, usually a pastor. Our classes on the "False Religions" was pretty well attended; we have very active Mormon/JW congregations in our town.
