Mark 3:29-30 says this:

"Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin'' because they were saying, ""He has an unclean spirit.''" -- NASB

My understanding is that the blasphemy "against the Holy Spirit" is the permanent rejection of the Holy Spirit as a witness to Jesus Christ, thus it is a rejection of Christ's gift of salvation until death. Would anyone care to expand this idea? Thanks....

You've quoted the Bible and given a good explanation of the "unpardonable sin." As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't need to be expanded. You were concise and to the point.

I would concur with MizDoulos also.
In the context of Mark 3:29-30 this was a pronouncement against the ones who were blaspheming Christ and as such it cannot be applied to anyone else. I do however believe that the modern day equivalent would be as HumbleJoe stated: "a permanent rejection of the Holy Spirit as a witness to Jesus Christ, thus it is a rejection of Christ's gift of salvation until death."

God Bless

I beleiev if it was thought that Christians would commit this, that it would have been mentioned more than once.

Actually, it's mentioned 3 times:
Matthew 12:31-32
Mark 3:28-30
Luke 12:10

Y'all are right though....
This blasphemy, roughly, is the permanent grievance and total rejection of the Holy Spirit as the messenger of Jesus' lordship, thus, a man is not forgiven because he rejects God and his salvation until death.

I agree with blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. My part of that question though was sorta brought up earlier in the thread. Do you think that a Christian could blasphemy the Holy Spirit and therefor lose their salvation?

Also, what about those who say suicide is an unforgivable sin? what would you say to them?

I know what I believe and why :) I'm just playing devil's advocate :)

Thank you for the replies.

I have a lot of unsaved loved ones (I bet we all do), but what I worry about is the constant rejection of the gospel message.

Can you harden your heart so much and get to a point where God gives up on you?

Just trying to understand,

God Bless

From what I see, attributing the works of God to Satan is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit as illustrated below.
humblejoe may wellbe correct though.

Mark 3:
1 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered.

2 They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.

3 He said to the man with the withered hand, "" Get up and come forward!''

4 And He said to them, ""Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?'' But they kept silent.

5 After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, ""Stretch out your hand.'' And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.

22 The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, ""He is possessed by Beelzebul,'' and "" He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.''

23 And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, ""How can Satan cast out Satan?

24 ""If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

25 ""If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

26 ""If Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished!

27 "" But no one can enter the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.

28 "" Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;

29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin''

30 because they were saying, ""He has an unclean spirit.''

Ok, so the if God's chosen people, His children, can blaspheme the Holy Spirit, why would we, adopted into the family of God, not be able to blaspheme the Holy Spirit?
But the hard question is if we commit the unpardonable sin, can
we lose our salvation. Well, it stands to reason that if we are unforgivable, how can we say we can claim salvation when the basis of salvation is forgiveness of our sin?

blas·phe·my (blsf-m)
n. pl. blas·phe·mies

1.

a) A contemptuous or profane act, utterance, or writing concerning God or a sacred entity.
b) The act of claiming for oneself the attributes and rights of God.
2. An irreverent or impious act, attitude, or utterance in regard to something considered inviolable or sacrosanct.

In context with the rest of the Bible, you must have to be commiting the blasphemy constantly.

Once you are a Christian, you no longer are Blaspheming, therefore you are safe.

KJV says this differently in Mark 3:29- 30-"BUt he that blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness , but is in DANGER of eternal damnation.BEcause they said, He had an unclean Spirit." (emphasis mine). I personally believe that satan uses these passages to get Christians to believe they arn't saved. What these people were doing in Mark 3 was saying that "HE", Jesus, was filled with a demon. This would be blasphemy, and anyone who says it today would certainly never be the type to turn their life over to God. You could also take it to mean that anyone who attributes the works of the Holy Spirit to the devil is blaspheming. On the other hand, we are told to "test the spirits" to see if they are of God. I don't believe that if a Christian made this mistake during testing they would be blasheming, but they would be "in DANGER of eternal damnation". If someone continued to attribute all of the Holy Spirit's works as demonic, they would probably not be the type of person who would ever turn their life over to God anyway. Some people believe in God & demons, but not Jesus & the Holy Spirit. I think these are the ones who would blaspheme them. My grandmother spoke in tongues & I don't believe it was of God. Am I going to hell? No. She was an atheist.

This is an interesting forum. I guess the reason I keep pressing this is to understand more a friend's plight and situation. I knew someone once who was struggling with her walk with the Lord and I and others were trying to encourage and lift her up but in the end she said as far as she was concerned there was no God, etc. If she had truly accepted the Lord as her Savior and then claimed there is no God or blasphemed the Holy Spirit....Well, that is why I keep asking :) I, as a daughter of God, would never think of denying God or the Holy Spirit but I was wondering what would happen in her case with her salvation.

If your friend was walking with the Lord, then says there is no God, she is probably angry with God for some reason. SHe may be questioning the existance of God out of what denomination she was raised. If they taught her false doctrine she has reason to question if EVERYTHING they taught her was a lie. I do not believe she is blaspheming. She may be "testing the spirits" in her own way. The previous verse does not show Jesus saying, "ok you guys are going to hell for eternity for what you said. Jesus goes on to other matters in the next verses. He is pointing out a real danger. There is hope for your friend, keep on praying for her. She has been offended somehow. On the other hand, I do believe God hardens the heart of those who defile him. Those are usually people who profess to be christian I believe. (they cast out demons in his name, but He knew them not.) SHe is lucky to have you as a friend. If you know why she feels this way, start from there & keep praying. Good luck.

Roberta,

You ask,
Can you harden your heart so much and get to a point where God gives up on you?

I am reminded of the son, who after years of squandering his life and money away, and living a sinnful life, returned to an open armed and joyful father. The father never stopped loving his wayward son. I believe this is a powerful lesson for God's children. Even though we are saved by grace and have the inherritance of the Kingdom of God, if we stray off the path of rightiousness God still loves us......Even to the piont that our sinful lifestyle causes us pain, and even death. There is more scripture to that effect. I don't remember were it is. I'll have to look it up for you.

Meanwhile, I hope this helps.

John

Amen Bear,
God "would that all men were saved" (sp)
so i don't believe God gives up on us individually, nor has he as a race (he's had ample opportunity though :( ) i believe God is and will continue his goal that all men would choose redemption through his sacrifice... if God gives up... the first question i have is when? at what point? i don't buy it! :D
