I only wish a couple more Orthodox were in this forum to help me there:

a quote from a person who believes there's a higher being, but not certain about the rest:

In the end, I would assume the Catholic church takes the hardest beating, because as you have told me, they were the first Church, and they have set up the rules as to what is meant to be a Christian. To me, that states that they should be the first ones setting a good example of what is meant by the love of Christ.

My Catholic friend's answer:

I think there are many reasons the Catholic church takes the hardest beating. One is because we are centralized, we are an easily definable and large target. And when you proclaim to be the church Christ founded, people do indeed have an expectation that should show.

(discussing Catholic Church scandals, and this is in there and I see it a lot. I have to butt in and explain the Orthodox Church has been from the beginning as well).

Well, unlike modern Protestant denominations which essentially started Christianity from scratch, the Roman, Greek, Antiochian etc. Churches all have a common origin and direct descent from the churches started by the Apostles themselves. It's not the case of two Churches from the beginning; it's One Church which has sadly (though temporarily, Deo volente) become two.

This forum has a rule saying that any time a foreign phrase is used it must be translated. Please explain what deo volente means. If it means what I think it means, we Orthodox do not subscribe to the Catholic view that the Church is split into two separate lungs. The Orthodox Church has been preserved inviolate and is not severed in half the way other non-Orthodox groups believe it to be.

I think this is the part that Michael doesn't like. and I have to agree with him. we are not One Church that has become two. there is only One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church as the Creed says. it is either the Roman Church, the Orthodox. it is not both.

Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible

(if anyone here would like to help me by joining in this board (it's free) and commenting on things from another Orthodox perspective, I'd be so thankful).

Hi Dorothea,

I would go further saying most people, in general, have no desire of learning or study history whether it is Orthodox, Catholic or the American Civil War. My recommendation would be to invite and provide, honest and sincere people wanting to learn history, with good resources.

What do you mean “Roman”, “Greek” Church? There was not such a thing. The word “Greek” is invented by the Franks in order to persuade the Latin-speaking Europe that the Roman Empire (known today as Byzantine) was Greek which meant back then heretical, false, fake-Christian, and so many negative things. The word Greek was a great insult to the Romans (Byzantines). Of course that’s not the case for today but it is a serious misconception to call the Orthodox Church… Greek.

Thank you! :)

I am from Georgia (former Soviet country) in Eastern Europe near Russia.

I would like to post my thoughts here and make new Orthodox Christian friends from all over the World.
That's wonderful! We're glad to have you. :)

Just a question: Why do you use the older Georgian flag and not the actual ?

Thanks
