Somebody ought to look at this school's accreditation, if it has one.

If I recall correctly, it is accredited, by one of the mainstream boards no less. Which kind of makes you wonder...

In any case, given their over-the-top disciplinary code, I'm not surprised by the article.

I'm still reeling from the fact that Bob Jones was re-accredited a few years back. Not by a mainstream board, but rather an accrediting board that took advantage of the Bush Administration relaxing some guidelines.

Ahhhh it's good to only have one choice in politics. That way it's not a democracy but Nazi Germany.

So? I may not personally agree with them, but then, I chose to go to a different university that was much more diverse. They have the right to be exclusive. Everyone else has the right to not be a student there if they don't like it. I'm tolerant of their right not to be. It's what makes my country so great. We actually have the rights and freedom other places only seem to pay lip service to these days.

As the leader of my university's College Democrats, it's pretty sad that this has happened....intolerance and lack of political freedoms seems to be key at "Liberty" University ;)

Given their usual approach towards student rights and freedoms - isn't this the school that prohibits interracial dating as well? - I can't say I'm surprised. I do think it's wrong to ban the club, but I also can't understand why a freethinking person interested in multiple viewpoints would attend there. Until this article, I wouldn't have imagined Liberty students wanting a Dem club.

As a Non-American..... I gotta ask...

Don't American pride themselves on both Freedom and Democracy?

I really don't get it.

As an American, neither do I. But, if you study fascism, it is rooted in religious coercion and domination, and it is this bastardized form of Christianity that seeks power and control (which is something America embarked upon when Reagan and Billy Graham first aligned Christianity to American causes).

Even a close study of nazism reveals just how closely it is structured to the earliest Christian models, only there, the "state" and its ideals became the highest authority. All you have to do is fool the masses into believing the "authority" is somehow sanctioned by God, and then you have the worst form of fascism the world can construct. There is no doubt, this produces the greatest war machine known to mankind. Today's growing Islamic fundamentalism is already proving how powerfully this can motivate and coalesce the ignorant masses.

Here in the US, the seeds of religious fascism have been planted. It's just that the sinister, ugly side of such a societal model has not yet fully been able to rear its ugly head. My guess is the increased pressure from fundamentalist terrorism will ferret it out, though, in very much the same way it did in 11th century Europe when Pope Urban II responded to the call for military help from Emperor Alexius I.

The first steps require that the voice of opposition be suppressed!

You're probably thinking Bob Jones University.....I think they used to say that black people were lesser beings or something of that sort.

That's the South for you. :|

Yes, that's a fun place I'm sure. But I think Liberty used to have a similar policy. I found this...

Students Flock to Liberty University - washingtonpost.com

Doris Gaffney, 22, from Spartansburg, S.C., who transferred to Liberty from Tennessee Temple University, also a fundamentalist school, said her new school "tries to make you excel at what you are best at. They don't try to make you into a Jerry Falwell."
Students said some rules have been relaxed from early days, when only Disney movies were shown and interracial dating was banned.

Dawn Simms, 22, a prenursing sophomore from Levittown, Pa., who is black, said that when mixed couples want to date, "the school calls both sets of parents to see if they know about it." That's all right with her, she said. "Parents should be a part of what you do."

Re Simms quote (^^):
Yes, parental involvement is often valuable, and if that were the reason that the school called parents, then parents would also be called when students from the same culture wanted to date. In other words, parents would *always* be called -- not just sometimes, and so culture would not be a relevant trigger issue. (Nor would age, seniority, or GPA, lol...)

I guess the harassment of conservatives at other universities is ok? Never seen a thread condemning that, but I guess there might be one somewhere.

I don't agree with Liberty U, but it is a private school.

Back when I was in college and a member of Campus Crusade for Cthulhu, the largest group of students and faculty, we had a policy of affording the small libertarian and conservative student groups every courtesy. It was a university, after all, a place where a spectrum of ideas are supposed to be found and allowed to interact. If we had called for them to be silenced, we would have been unworthy of the title university.

Furthermore, if we had silenced them, we would have appeared afraid of their ideas, and unable to come up with anything of merit to debate them, instead of being secure in our forbidden knowledge that one day the stars would be right, and the Great Old Ones would again shamble across the face of the earth.

Or maybe it is just that left-wing authoritarianism is rarer than right-wing authoritarianism.

As it should be Maneki!

Maybe I just hear the right wingers complaints, but it seems to be conservative at Cal, Yale, etc, is to be derided endlessly.

and to the O/P, if you think we really have legitimate choices in the US, you are sorely mistaken. The parties are almost indistinguishable in 90% of all matters. Tax and spend vs borrow and spend, pander to whoever got them elected, etc.

That's why many of us do not vote (I do vote), because we see no difference in any of the candidates.
