You know, there are plenty of reasons why one could criticize Obama or any president, heck I can think of some myself. However, is it just me or are the plethora of 10 threads per day criticizing Obama just about as sophomoric, uncritical, and superficial as they seem to be?

It's not just you.

I thought that once the election was over, maybe we'd finally see an end to petty threads about flag lapel pins and conspiracy theorizing about birth certificates. Unfortunately, the petty smears don't show any sign of ending any time soon.

I just ignore people that inject "Obamessiah" and pettiness about teleprompters into every conversation. You can't reason with people that have a chip on their shoulder and dare you to knock it off. I've learned not to try.

I mean if I am to think of all those who my critique the president, I only find oldbetang actually presenting sound sourced critique and the rest of these guys just make me yawn as they apply the take the spaghetti wall approach.

Nope it is not just you. I have no problem with real honest criticism but a lot of the stuff that gets posted is just a waste of time and virtual ink.

Politics brings out the worst in people. It's why I don't frequent this place nearly as much as I used to. Brought out the worst in me and I didn't like it. People stop caring about what is right for the country and instead treat it like some sort of football game, where all that matters is that the other side loses.

See my sig. We tend to think of fanatics as fringe loonies, but I see this attitude here on this very forum nearly every time I visit.

You are talking about a group of people who do not know how to think. It is not that they are stupid, but that the skill set necessary to formulate an opinion with evidence and logical substance is simply not there. And it is not like this is difficult, but it does take some time and effort. Such activity is denigrated by the base, so it is unacceptable to be an independently minded individual in the Republican Party.

Unfortunately it is also in the best interest of their Party to not have that skill set. Once a Republican starts exhibiting independence they are labeled RINOs and dismissed. What is interesting is that this is blatantly manipulative. The base is being used, and rather than care, they fight to keep their blinders on.

I wrote PresidentObama a letter today I plan to mail it out this week. I thanked him for caring about education, and taking it so seriously.

Education is the great equalizer, if someone can get better grades than another person at the same school then you get a sense that one person is more talented than the other. I take education very seriously, I feel that it is in a certain sense the most important profession for shaping the democracy. Unfortunately though our schools have serious problems ridiculous problems, and it will take sound leadership to straighten these problems out. I fear we may need an entire revolution in poor people's perception of education.

I taught at a school that was a middle school and an elementary school in one. One time a parent called a fifth grade teacher at the school and told the teacher that "She never had to learn her times table so I don't think my daughter should have to either." Just think about that, and think about how 1/3 of all freshman drop out of school and every 26 seconds someone drops out of school. We need a hero to provide sound leadership and get this country on the road to recovery, Gobama or go crazy!

I do not think it is that easy. I did very, very well in High School, but I also have an absolutely wicked case of ADD and was lazy to boot, so I never really tried. I went to a very prestigious college and I did the same, very good grades, but well short of potential. My brother is the opposite. Out of my family he is the least intellectually gifted (a fact he recognizes and has commented on) but has an insane work ethic and is very, very successful. It was not until well into adulthood that I really learned to study, and even now I have problems. So I think you are right, but I think there is usually more to the equation.

It is very embarrassing that in our society someone who can hit, throw, or kick a ball better than most of the population makes 7 figures but people like teachers, police officers, and firemen are paid relatively little for their efforts. This is capitalism, however.

For a developed nation, the US is HORRIBLY undereducated. Compared to other, dare I point out more socialist, nations we are far, far behind in educational achievement. It is sad because so much scorn is heaped on teachers and the NEA and other similar educational organizations. This is not to ignore problems that exist and many of the problems do come from parents abandoning their role in education, but we need to recognize how important education is and work to change it.

I totally agree with your last paragraph there. I feel that parents do need to step up to the plate to encourage their children to respect their teachers and learn from them. However some children are really bad and now adays my God you could simply restrain a child from attacking another child and the school freaks out and accuses you of child abuse. I mean our society is destroying itself by not allowing parents to discipline their children. I mean sometimes a kid needs to have some sense knocked into them, (but not beaten into them) to get them grounded a conditioned correctly in society's ways of doing things, such as following social taboos and respecting their elders when they are taught right from wrong. I mean think about it, 1/3 of all high school freshman drop out, that is a problem with our cultural, it really is. I have never imagined an entire civilization with unruly children, it will only get better once america realizes and internalizes how horribly misled the youth of america really are.

I edited this by the way:
I took out that comment it didn't sound right after I read it again my apologies. Kid do not need to be beaten that is for sure.

About Barack Obama, this utopia he is promising us will probably take a while to come around if we could even get close towards getting utopia in this term and even in the next term, I betch'ya that we could get close enough to where it is passing for Utopia.

Maybe happiness is relative? Should the government try this hard to make everybody happy? Or Is Barack Obama trying to protect people's rights towards health care and fair practices in the banking industry? I think there is difference between just trying to make people happy and protect people's rights.

I believe the problem with education mainly the drop out rate is a threat to national security and who knows how to fix that? Things should be better than they are, and it is nice tohave a president you can really look up to, and feel enabled with his slogan, "Yes we can!" That is my kind of president.

Why is this called the "Democrat Safehouse". The proper form of the noun is "Democratic." To use Democrat in this context is to engage in a political slur against members of the Democratic Party

I think the real question is why we still only have one safehouse. conservatives have three stickied and several more unstuck. We need to keep pace.

I propose: Liberal safehouse, progressive safehouse, socially progressive safehouse, and maybe pinko liberal commie safehouse. In the last one we could talk about how we all like to do stereotypical things like drink lattes in our Priuses as we go to our weekly kitten eating convention instead of church.

Could be great fun.
