I was wondering . . . How do you die of old age? Does your brain just get tired of working? I understand that you could have health complications and everything. But what if you are perfectly healthy without any disease or anything? Does your heart just decide to up and stop pumping?

One of the things that geneticists have discovered is that cells are preprogrammed to die after a certain number of cell divisions.

The day of your death is written in the book of life, in a way.

If your otherwise healthy, your can die from one of two things. Either your heart quits, or your lungs stop breathing. That is why it is possable to bring someone back to life, by getting their lungs to start to breath again, & getting their heart pumping again.

Everyone should be trained in how to do CPR.

I heard a story once, that it use to be when people died, they would put a bell on them. They they would have someone working the grave yard or the night shift at the cemetary. So if any bells would ring, they knew they had a "dead ringer".

Luke 12:19-21
And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry." ' [20] But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' [21] So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Even when it is said someone died of old age, they died of something specific.

A lot of older people just quit eating. We kept my grandmother alive for about 5 years by force feeding her. She was not always real happy about it, she did not always want to eat. But they hired an aid to take care of her and force her to eat.

She lived to be 100. She outlived my mom by 6 weeks. There was nothing wrong with her. She was very strong right up to when she died, and esp. she never lost her sense of humor.

So it would be more accurate to say that our cells are numbered?

This is interesting. Thanks, all.

Cells age. When they cloned Dolly from a 6 year old sheep, the cells in the clone were 6 years old.

So if you could clone a 90 year old man, you would end up with a baby with 90 year old cells.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

the cells in the clone were fresh. the DNA was 6 years old.

and stopping heart/lungs may not be the only cause of death. decapitation will usually kill a person. so will gigantic loss of blood. large blow to the brain. many other things.

scientists are now researching a part of DNA, called Telomerase. it's a bunch of junk DNA at the end, most likely a buffer zone of some kind, that has a little bit shaved off every time the DNA replicates. after conception until the first several years of childhood, these ends don't shorten with the help of some enzymes. this enzyme stops being produced after a while.

the little buffer zones may help keep the DNA in good shape, but as we get older, there may be ends of the useful DNA being shaved off and the body doesn't function as well without all the information. also, after 75 years or so of damage due to radiation, poisoning, stuff like that DNA gets damaged.
