Greyhounds are the most loving, affectionate of dogs. They are are very long, established, noble breed, originating in Egypt over 4000 years ago. But what happens to those who do not make the grade, suffer healable injuries or retire from racing? Many are placed in rehoming centres, but many, many more disappear without a trace - put to death by unscupulous owners and trainers who cannot be bothered to give them to a rehoming centre or rehome them themselves. Incidently, two of our Greyhounds, we got direct from the racing kennels - one was retired and the other didn't make the grade. The following story and thumbnail pictures at end of this post say it all:

Revealed: the man who killed 10,000 dogs
Daniel Foggo Sunday Times July 16th 2006

THE secret slaughter of at least 10,000 racing greyhounds by one man has been exposed by an undercover investigation. For the past 15 years XXX, a builders’ merchant, has been killing healthy greyhounds no longer considered by their trainers to be fast enough to race. He buries them in a one-acre plot at the back of his home in Seaham, Co Durham. Last week The Sunday Times covertly filmed Smith on two consecutive days receiving greyhounds from trainers before killing them with a bolt gun, dumping them in the plot and covering over the “graves” using a mechanical digger.

He told an undercover reporter it took him three years to fill the field, at which point he simply started all over again. “Within a year the bodies have gone,” said XXX. “It takes me about three years to get across there and by the time I get there I can start back here again and there are only a few bones left.” According to Sunday Times calculations and testimony of two racing insiders, it is conservatively estimated XXX has killed at least 10,000 dogs

So please, please, if you are considering getting a dog please decide on a Greyhound. They will love you forever!

They really are lovely dogs :) We've had some at the shelter I work at.

Its sad what they are forced to go through for the sake of sport. It's true, they do love to run and give chase, but if your going to participate in the sport of racing/lure course, make sure it's for the dog and make sure your own pride doesn't get the better of you and the dog ends up being neglected or mistreated. As much as they love running, they also love being a member of the family and being a couch potatoe :p

I also want to add that they are EXCELLENT apartment dogs. Better than small dogs. They don't require a lot of exercise, they're quiet, and non aggressive. I don't think your neighbors would even know you had a dog.

I want one sooooo bad but I cannot get one yet. I will adopt one in the near future! :)

ETA: My dad loves dogs. He was hired to run and manage a greyhound farm where they trained them to race. Anytime his assistant was mean to the dogs he'd get all over him about it and my dad named one of the class A 1st place greyhounds after me haha. Weird. But he loved those dogs so much. Eventually we had to move away from the farm but

He always wante to adopt a retired greyhound. We never did. Now I live with my hubby and fil. we cannot adopt one yet but when my FIL passes away and we're done helping to take care of him we'll purchase our own home and then ill get a greyhound. I want a blue one or a brindle one b ut I'll take any color. I'd love blue though and female. :)

I really like greyhounds. They are so beautiful and graceful, as well as sweet natured. They have got to be my favorite breed of dog.

I can't have one because I live in an apartment. I can't have any dog for that matter. Even though dogs are allowed here, when you are a renter, it's so hard to find places that do allow them that it's best to just not have any. :(

I've never had a dog in my life, but if I could, I'd choose a greyhound!
