Hi, just wondering if there is a better choice to know about related to selecting a proper font in say, Word. I've pasted some Hebrew text into Word, and can notice a wide ranging difference in the way that the text is displayed. (not surprising :D) Sounds silly maybe, as I understand the concept of changing text in English encoded texts via font, but have no clue which font shows the Hebrew text in what would be considered a "classic" sense. Hope that makes sense... for example "Times New Roman" seems to show better detail.

Any hints/tips? :)

Okay, this can get cornfusing... found a wonderfull site describing and teaching The Hebrew Alphabet. As a total noob to this, showing how to correctly write out (draw the lines like this... 1, 2, 3, etc) the letters is great. This gets confusing because it show 3 different glyphs for each letter - "Book Print", "Manual Print", and "Cursive". The "Book Print" looks like what you would/could change via fonts with your computer. Some fonts look like any one of the three - "Book Print", "Manual Print", and "Cursive", but represent the same single letter. Pheww... guess you just focus on the basics - "Manual Print", and learn how to write those out, and even though the "Book Print" and "Cursive" letters look for the most part... completley dissimilar, plod on. [shrug] :)

For typing in Word, I think it's most common to use either Arial or David (at least in Israel). Of course, people have their preferences, but these are the two that I see most in regular use in the Land. Hope that helps.

By the way, the way he has written the by hand is actually not clean. I would not suggest following the "manual print" examples he has given. If my scanner were working, I would scan a handwriting sample for you. When I get it hooked up, I'll do that.

In the meantime, just learn to write in cursive rather than in print, which no one uses at all (except maybe in Christian seminaries).

Thank you much jaihare, hate to trouble you to setup your scanner, but if you're able to get it going... cool! Appreciate your advice to just learn cursive right now, simpler is betterer :).

...had an idea... thinking about making a simple Hebrew/English desktop keyboard/flashcard program. Any idea where I could find non-copywrited sound files (.wav would be best, but good quality .mp3 would work too) of the Hebrew alphabet? Was thinking that having two senses involved, i.e. visual and hearing, would make for faster/easier learning. Your help in selecting a good represenative font... helps too, thanks again.

I know it's a long time in coming, but I finally got the scanner working and did this one up for you. I've put a print font, my cursive handwriting and a square script (which no one really uses). I've also put an example of Genesis 1:1 in both my cursive hand and the square script. I hope you like it. It's nothing perfect. I just threw it together in about five minutes. Best of luck!
