Here's the exercise:

Pick up a fiction book, any book will do. Close your eyes, and open the book to a random page, placing your finger at a random place on the page. That begins your sentence. It might be a dialogue, it might be an action scene, or description, but at the point that the sentence comes to a stop, you must carry the thought on. Make it creative, make it interesting, make it fun.

Type out the original sentence (citing the book and author at the end of your exercise) followed by your own. You must write at least a paragraph (3+ sentences).

Have fun, and I expect this will be a big challenge, but worthwhile, and fun to read!

Happy writing,
~Sean

Thanks for posting this! I followed the directions exactly, and used the novel I’m currently reading. Here’s the result.

Learoyd spread out his hands as if he were carrying a large dish. All the lights in the room flared brighter, and then faded into twilit dimness. As the twelve guests shuffled uneasily, the door creaked open and a huge bullgfrog hopped in. When it opened its mouth a dozen fairies flew out, each rather ominously carrying a crossbow and arrows.

“Have you ever,” Aaron whispered to the man seated at his right, “heard of a wizard named ‘Learoyd’?”

Joel shook his head. “Nor have I heard of a ‘séance’ that included toads the size of rottweillers and a flock of armed and dangerous Tinkerbells. I hope you brought your revolver, because I think this pair of ghost-hunters just got in way over our heads.”

The Link: A Victorian Mystery by Robin Maugham, p. 131 [A book, btw, I do NOT recommend. I started reading it thinking it was a “mystery.” So far, the only mystery is where Maugham’s hiding the plot. :) ]

(Note: I hope to comment on a lot of the other threads as time permits. They’ve gotten so interesting lately! I’m at the querying phase of two novels right now, however, which is mega time consuming, so I’ll have to post as my schedule permits.)

Great job! You're quite good at this, I see! Hehe. And I think you are definitely in the right field when it comes to writing novels. I'll do this exercise myself in the next few days, promise! :)

to do something with the sand, to play and make a pile in the sand. thats what I was wondering as I watched a bunch of four year olds play in the sand pit. What do they want to do with the sand, and why is sand so appealing to them. I guess it is because it can be made into so many different things, and then be destroyed so easily, to be shaped again and again.

I stop playing with sand a long time ago but sometimes I still wish I was a little kid and I could still play in the sand pit without being seen as a freak or a weirdo. As i am know old all I can do is watch the four year olds who I am babysitting. If only I was little again that would be so much fun.

"When the eclipse happens - will it be frightening?"
"Well it should only last for half an hour. It's really nothing to worry about."
"How dark will it get?"
"It won't be like at night. It doesn't get that dark."
He paused in thought as he said this.
"It may not be dark enough to trigger the sensors on the security lights. I didn't think of that."
"Dad? What is it."
"Get your sister. We need to make sure all the windows and doors are locked."

first line is from Day Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko
not quite sure where I was going with the rest of it.
