What's love got to do with it?

OK, I divorced mid year 2008. I am self-employed and have continued via Cobra medical insurance that I had through her. I am bipolar and am refused by every insurance company I've applied with and due to an error in billing I lost the Cobra today. I am panicky and depressed but have thought of a possible solution.

What would you say of my remarrying my former spouse technically so that I can get insurance through her if she would agree?

Seems to me there would be a way to buy insurance if you have the money. But I've no clue how you would go about it. I'd start by asking isurance companies about some sort of umbudsman or information service that they could put you in touch with. Maybe the state medical office? An HR person incharge of the medical benifits. where you work.

Bipolars hit a wall, believe me. I have even proposed the bipolar part not being insured, they won't go for it.

I'm self employed so there is no one to appeal to there. I guess I was curious ethically of people's views on remarrying to get a status for eg insurance even if one was to live a single life in that marriage.

Explain further. If you are married but living apart, then for how long? And then you would have to divorce for a trivial reason? Also, you would be considered as "putting away your wife" without giving her a bill of divorce, thus tempting her into adultery (what should be, I believe, the proper translation of Malachi 2:16).

To avoid legalism, you should really be asking the Lord bro. I'm not really sure what the whole situation entails but it sounds pretty dodgy to me. Is there any other alternative?

I would suggest speaking to attorney who specializes in healthcare law. Morally, however, I believe that there are some issues with marrying for the purpose of maintaining insurance. Just my opinion. Hopefully, this kind of nonsense from insurance companies will soon be outlawed.

I'm lucky. I live in the UK. We have (open quotes) socialised medicine (close quotes) such that no one in our nation faces the dilemma you do. I know; I had a massive mental breakdown including something called schizo-affective disorder, which is like schizophrenia but for older people, I'm told. Anyway. My country has funded my medical care and kept me in enough money for food and rent for the last 10 years. I'm proud of it, and prouder still when I consider my good fortune in this respect is the same for everyone here, regardless of race, creed, colour, sex, gender, caste, class and income.

I truly hope you find an answer that doesn't involve using your ex-wife in the way you suggest. Meanwhile, I truly hope America, the richest country in the world, manages to find a way to provide the health-care each and all it's citizens need, free at the point of need, through some kind of universal insurance scheme. It is the only civilised solution.

Best wishes, 2ndRateMind.

It's been a long time since I posted back. She offered a few times for me to remodel a new room and stay here, getting married or not. I did not feel led to do either; the issues between us would be harmful to me as she still refuses to face her "demons".

No, I found a program (O'Bama deal) where if I go 6 mos uninsured I can get health insurance despite pre-existing conditions here in Ohio. I'm presently uninsured, holding my breath, and will be eligible in Feb '12.
