Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 John 4:7-10
Psalm 72:1-2, 3-4, 7-8
Mark 6:34-44

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

In this life we are called to love one another, but what is love?
In John's first letter we find the answer, God.

Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.
In this way the love of God was revealed to us:
God sent his only-begotten Son into the world
so that we might have life through him."(1 John 4:8-9)
We see and learn how to love the way God intended us, through the example of Jesus Christ. In today's gospel Jesus freely gives love through time and education. He taught over 5000 men; He took the time to be with them and to help them grow as individuals by teaching them about God our Father.

We too are called to care for those around us by taking the time to say "hello" and share a smile or two. To demonstrate that love by the little things we do. We are not only called to care for people emotionally and spiritually but also physically. They actually go hand in hand. What have you done this week to show those around you how much you appreciate, and love them. Perhaps an uplifting word, a card, a helping hand, a meal, a hug, or just spending time together would help unite you to Gods love.

By helping someone else and demonstrating your love (Gods love) to them, you are showing that person that they matter and are important. This is one of the reasons why Jesus feed the 5000 men with five loaves and two fish. He cared for them and wanted to provide for them both spiritually and physically. He also showed us, His disciples, that God's love and grace can take our little actions of love and make them into something greater than we ever imagined.

Love is: 1 Corinthians 13

Charity is patient,
is kind:
charity envieth not,
dealeth not perversely;
is not puffed up;
5 Is not ambitious,
seeketh not her own,
is not provoked to anger,
thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth;
7 Beareth all things,
believeth all things,
hopeth all things,
endureth all things.
8 Charity never falleth away:
whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed.

Beautiful reminder Isabella. We just went over this in our class Monday night. We are focusing on the Holy Trinity right now. God is love and I always knew this but to have it explained the way the Priest did in class, brought a whole new refresher perspective for me. And here you put this up this morning. :amen:

Love is a word used much too often. I love cake; I love to shop; I love Florida. Love is both seen and unseen; it is both vocal and silent; always active. When love abounds, there is no darkness. Love begins with ones self; the very creation God made in His likeness. The one who gave us life; who gave His life; is LOVE.

It is said in the textbooks that love is a four letter word, but i believe it is a three letter word, God. All that is good is from God, when we experience love, we experience something of what it means to be in union with God, even when we consider ourselves to be without God, when we make the choice to reject God. Those who love, even when we consider ourselves God-less, experience God. We may believe we are set apart from God because we choose it to be so, but though our sin can separate us from God, even sinners love and however imperfectly we love, it is the hearts desire to love and to be loved and thus to know God.

It has been said, by St. Augustine I believe, that we each have a God shaped hole in our hearts. I believe that to be so. A surgeon may never find it, but it is there all the same, it is in the very core of our being, of who we are.

Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my girlfriend"). This diversity of meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states.

As an abstract concept, love usually refers to a deep, ineffable feeling of tenderly caring for another person. Even this limited conception of love, however, encompasses a wealth of different feelings, from the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love to the nonsexual emotional closeness of familial and platonic love to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love. Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts.

The first time I realized what unconditional love really was when I had my daughter. After a long hospital stay, surgeries, etc... My daughter was finally home, and we were comfy rocking away together in the rocking chair. I was quietly thanking God for my little blessing.

I remember taking a deep slow breath (smell if you will) of the scent of my baby, and all of the sudden it hit me like a waterfall of emotions, and I was overwhelmed with this feeling of a complete unconditional love. I then said (balling now), "Oh my gosh, this is how very much my own mother loves me even now. This is how much (and more) our Father in Heaven, Our Lord Jesus and our Blessed Mother loves me."

It was the most unbelievable moment that the Holy Spirit gave to me that my small brain could understand about the truth of Love.

The amazing thing is, whenever the Holy Spirit gives you something, it is a gift that burns into your cellular structure and your soul. You never forget that moment or the details of it. I can recall it just like it was yesterday, even the smell of my baby.

What Joy and Peace it gave me.

We must be careful that we don't define love purely as an emotion. That can be powerful and beautiful, but also fickle and prone to adverse temptation.

1 Cor 13 is, I think, the real guide. There is a brilliant synonym for "to love" in Italian: "volere bene" - "to want good (for somebody)". That is in the end all that Christian love is. To unconditionally, steadily, want the best for x, y and z, - never to want revenge, "getting even", want to squash them, or even disregard them. But to take every chance to advance someone else's good the way you would take every chance to advance your own good. And to SEE the best in them, to see them as basically good, beautiful and lovable - like it is so easy to do with our own baby - and like we know God sees us all.

Tall order. But easier than to think we must FEEL loving towards everyone, which is impossible and unnecessary. It is enough to think and act the part.
