This is ridiculous. This has nothing to do with freedom of speech or freedom of religion or anything beyond trying to sell the largest amount of stuff to the most people. Retailers are free to instruct there staff to greet people in what ever way management desires. If they choose to use the most inclusive greeting possible, so be it. If they choose to instruct their staff to say "Merry christmas to ye faithful, may the rest of you burn in hell" so be it. Unless they are selling fundamentalist christian paraphernalia, I am guessing the first option makes more business sense than the second.

The United States is suppose to be a free society but the simple notion of telling someone "Merry Christmas" is being suppressed by the retail sector as if it were an offensive sentimentality. How utterly ridiculous and un-American (I know, I know... most people think America shouldn't have traditions, religions, or anything that would identify it as anything more than one big secular, generic, nothing.) How stupid.

Apparently I am not suppose to be offended that my faith is considered as offensive during a time of year when traditionally America has held it as a time of celebration. However, it is understandable that the very mention of the holiday is offensive to someone of no faith or other faith. So you tell me- who is deciding who is offended here?
Better yet- tell me what is so damned offensive about a Christmas tree? Or saying "Merry Christmas" at Christmas time?

See note above. The fundamental rights of many Americans are being trampled on - freedom of speech... freedom of religion... and you want to lecture me about freedom?

You got that right. As far as offense goes I'm all for equal opportunity. If it isn't obvious I am sick of the PC BS this country suffers from. I could care less if I walk into a Chinese restaurant and they are observing Chinese New Year or I notice that they never hire any other ethnicity than Asian. I don't care if I hear Happy Kwanzaa or if I see a woman wearing a burka. It is America. There are alot of different peoples that make up this country... But guess what? People need to realize that there is a majority presence in this country that celebrates Christmas between Thanksgiving (or is that the Indian holocaust to you) and New Year.

You can bet I do.

You do realize that being offended by Happy Holidays is just as stupid, don't you.

The boss.

Doesn't matter really. I don't really understand what's so offensive about "Happy Holidays," but I'll take your word for it.

If you think that employees have the right or the freedom to say whatever they want, then yes.

Great. Open your own store and say Merry Christmas all you want.

Im not offended by happy holidays- it [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]es me off that such weight is given to someones argument that Merry Christmas is offensive- so much so that they suppress the mention of Christmas.

As a Christian and a retail worker, what irritates me are the people who get ticked off no matter what you say. Sure, I have had people cuss me for saying "Merry Christmas"... but I have had far more people act like jerks and make a big deal if I say "Happy Holidays"

I'm allowed to say whatever I feel is polite and proffesional. After being given the "War on Christmas" diatribe for the 10th time while trying to be polite to customers, I'd rather say neither.

If "They" want to and run a business isn't that their right as the owners of said business ?
Or do you overrule what other owners of Business want ?

It is totally their right. I never said it wasn't. I just said it is against an American tradition of celebrating Christmas, it is political correctness run amok, and it is stupid.

It is entirely about selling stuff. You have two choices, a greeting that is relevant to and includes the entire population and a greeting that is relevant to and includes only a subset of the population. If you are in the business of selling stuff to as many people as possible, wouldn't it make more sense to use the first?

As much as we disagree I am glad to see that you also think this resolution is stupid.

I never understand this war on Christmas deal.

It makes perfect sense for retailers to want to tailor their greetings to their largest target audience. I have friends who are of all faiths. If I wanted to save money on cards, do I buy the card packet that say "Merry Christmas"? Or "Happy Holidays"? If 20% of my friends are Jewish, 5% are Muslim, and 5% are Buddhist, it make more sense to just have the "Happy Holiday" card.

As retailers, they are like me, they want to maximize usage of a simple greeting. It's not about offending anyone, it's about getting as many people to buy crap as possible.

Instead of treating the winter holidays like a Christmas thing, retailers are trying to be inclusive so they can the widest possible number of people into the store. This isn't about PC, it's good business sense.

When a Jew walks into a store, they may feel more likely to buy something if they think there's less Christian theme to it ("oh, you mean this isn't a Christmas stocking, it's a holiday stocking? Ok....").

As for making people say whatever, it's not a violation of anyone's freedom of religion to instruct them on how to greet people.

When I worked as a shop clerk, we were given limited latitude on how to interact with customers. Was I offended for telling people "Merry Christmas" when I wasn't a Christian? Nope. It was my job to greet people this way because we lived in a midwestern city that was predominately Christian.

Is it a violation of someone's faith if they were told they had to say "Season's Greetings" because they worked in New York City where half the people aren't even Christians? Nope, it's whatever gets the customers in the door.

Working in retail is not a time to proselytize or to tell everyone how religious you are. You do whatever the boss tells you to do and attend your place of worship for the religious experience.

It's an American tradition to say Merry Christmas? Holy crap that's a new one on me.. oh CELEBRATE Christmas.. yeah perhaps for you, maybe even many. But not ALL Americans celebrate Christmas.

What is stupid is this nonsense of getting upset over what a retailer requires of its employees. I think ALL places of business should require their employees to say "Merry Christmas". Then we can force all businesses to require their employees say "Happy Rahshashana", or "Happy Eid ul-Adha" and watch as the Christians come running.

I think most retail workers greet me with a welcome to the name of the store or hi and buy.I really don't see the big deal either way.

PC people on the left want to make sure no one is offended, PC people on the right want to make sure the mojority isn't somehow slighted... I'm tired of PC people on both sides of the fence.

What matters is that I wished you a happy holiday season, who cares if I said Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Blessed Yule, ect...

BTW

I wish everyone here at CF a Blessed Holiday Season, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

It's not Christmas yet.

It won't be Christmas until December 25.

Christmas lasts from December 25 through January 6.

Senator ElStupido should submit a bill forcing retailers to wish customers a penitent Advent.

Big fonts are fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As someone who works in retail I'll say why I just really don't care.

Some of the people I work with know I am an atheist. Though most don't. I've walked in and read in the break room; The God Delusion, God is Not Great, and other atheist literature. No one's bated an eye. One of my friendliest associates there, who gives me a ride home on days we both get off at the same time is a born again Christian :) When I sneeze, most of the people there say, "bless you." and gasp! I don't bat an eyelash over it. The only reason I find the store playing Christmas music now since the first all the way till Christmas is that most of the music is tacky, and listening to the same stuff over and over again is horrible. Though thankfully there are some instrumentals and a few Harry Conic junior versions of songs that are good.

If someone says Marry Christmas to me, I say it back. What the heck is the big deal? Ok, some Christian wants to say it and think about teh Jesus and all that. Ok fine. Me I think about the little stuff my family does. Putting up the tree, watching everyone be all groggy and the morning and laughing while people open presents. Ok fine too.

Heck I am an atheist and yeah I am ever so slightly annoyed at how retail chains have gone to more of the generic stuff, because I think it smacks a little of PC-ism. But I think really in the end they do it because of reasons beyond that. One because customers anymore often act like self absorbed sensitive types who want to get upset and talk to a manager at the slightest bit of resistence. Two because our society is becoming so increasingly pluralistic public stores often feel obligated to cater out a more general message.

as lazor said. He could have spent time and money actually doing helpful things. This is just a waste. I doubt the hardcore Christians who absolutely MUST feel insulted by this stuff and act like there is a critical "war for our souls." in the works here will change. But I've cared as much for their wellbeing about as much as I care about this Happy Holidays stuff.

I prefer to not be "greeted". If I need help I ask. I don't go shopping to validate myself.

That's part of why, anytime I've worked anywhere that wants people on the floor to be rabid psycho greeters when it comes to walking by customers I don't. Yeah I'll make sure to say hi, ask if anyone needs help. But too many retailers seem to be a little out of touch with reality on some of their ideas about how to engage customers.
