Hello! I am going to go to Ireland in about 27 days to be an au pair. I am very anxious and nervous. I am going to stay there about 8 months. Does anyone have advice what to wear or bring or anything? I live in Arizona,USA... where it is dry and warm/hot most of the time.. Also I would like to bring some gifts to the kids and the famliy? Do you have any ideas? (like cowboy stuff, Navjo stuff, american stuff, etc) Thank you! :) I am going to be staying in Athlone.

God bless!

Good on you for traveling.

The climate in Ireland is very close to here so I'll base my advice on this. At the moment we're heading into winter so it's getting colder and wet so bring warm clothes such as jumpers (is that a term Americans use?), nice thick socks and at least 1 coat that has some form of waterproofing. The weather will be warming up again around April-May.

If carrying so much stuff over is a problem then you can buy some stuff in Ireland. If cost would be a problem you can always get some reasonable things from charity shops but at the moment the high street is slashing prices with the runup to xmas so there should be some reasonable deals.

Your gift ideas sound fine, I think kids would be facinated with the Native american/cowboy stuff. Might be an idea to bring along some stuff from your own life back home like photos ect... good way of showing the family about your home (good icebreaker) and will be nice for you if you ever get homesick but be careful that they're replaceable as it would be horrible if you lost things with sentimental value and you had no replacements.

Anyway that's all I can think of atm, if you have anymore questions just ask. I hope you have a nice time.

The presents idea is a very good plan- when I moved to Germany, I brought the people I'm staying with some biscuits, which went down very well. Most of all- good luck! Hope you have a good time there!
