The queen of England is also the queen of all the English colonies.

AU/NZ is so far from England. Wasn't there other kings and Queens, such as France and Spain? Did England beat them in war and they became an English Colony?

I find this history fascinating, but very confusing.

The English were the first Europeans to settle Australia. Other European countries had snapped up other real estate in the area (the Dutch in Indonesia, the Spanish in the Philippines).

The English used Australia for a prison colony, at first. They would have sent the prisoners to the US, but you guys had had a revolution...

Then I can assume to say that most of your country's ancestors are from the UK and Ireland? When did your country have it's revolution? Is this day celebrated?

I think about half the people in the country would have ancestors from the UK and Ireland, the rest would have ancestors from somewhere else.

We never had a revolution. We achieved independence peacefully, remaining part of the British Commonwealth.

Something is wrong here. I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Spanish - enough is enough. Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close. Sorry if this offends anyone but this is MY COUNTRY.
I don't see the problem in singing the national anthem in Spanish. If they love the country, and want to sing it in a language they feel most comfortable in...so what?

I do see your point, but on the other hand they aren't citizens here... so I can see how some could be offended, but either way I think this is a silly issue. I actually meant to take that part out. My main intrest was about the first part of the letter written by the teacher. It was more of a concern on my part with the government than with the people themselves and if you had to deal with the same issues in your country.

One student from the Dominican Republic told me that she didn't want me to find a job for her after she finished my program, because she was getting housing from our housing department and she was getting a PELL grant which paid for her total tuition and books, plus money leftover.

She was looking into WAIT which gives students a CREDIT CARD for gas to come to school, and into CARIBE which is a special program ( check it out - I did,
http://www.caribeprogram.com/ <http://www.caribeprogram.com/> See below) for immigrants and it pays for child care and all sorts of needs while they go to school or training. The one student I just mentioned told me she was not going to be a US Citizen because she plans to return to the Dominican Republic someday and that she 'loves HER country.'

I asked her if she felt guilty taking what the US is giving her and then not even bothering to become a citizen and she told me that it doesn't bother her, because that is what the money is there for!

I asked the CARIBE administration about their program and if you ARE a US Citizen, you don't qualify for their program. And all the while, I am working a full day, my son-in-law works more than 60 hours a week, and everyone in my family works and pays for our education .

I understand that "CARIBE" is a programme for helping refugees and those that have fled persecution in other countries.

Most countries have schemes for helping genuine refugees, and I think that providing such assistance is a Christian duty.

Here in Australia we've had some debate on who is or isn't a genuine refugee, but everyone agrees that we have a duty to help genuine refugees.

Such refugees usually become citizens, if that's what worries you, simply because they have nowhere else to go.

I agree with you, it is a christians duty for anyone to help. So as long as you are helping, you know you've done your deed. If one takes advantage then it's on that individual.

It's weird cause if I were in the persons shoes the teacher is speaking of in this letter, I would probably do the same thing to better myself. On the other hand I do see the teachers point, because I myself am stuggling to pay for school. I do not qualify for any grants.

I think it's a curse sometimes when you can agree with both sides of an issue. :)
