If you have been at a certain parish for a while, you get to know the issues closest to your priest's heart. The ones that he feels called to speak upon often.
Which things does your priest bring forward often?
I have recognised these three topics as close to the heart of our parish priest, who happens to be a wonderful homilist.

- Having an apathic faith
- Stewardship
- The Real Presence

At my new parish the priest speaks of how we are loved by God and his homilies challenge me because they aren't all 'you are loved by God' end of...they are 'You are loved by God and God asks X of you'. He is a very softly spoken priest, but no one talks or make a sound when he is giving the homily. He keeps his homilies quite short too and he is concise.

My old parish, the priest would go on and on for about 15- 20 minutes sometimes, which would have been okay if he did not like the sound of his own voice, but he was very self promoting and told me he often didn't know what he was going to say until he got up and said it. Sometimes it worked out fine and he delivered a great homily, but most times you could tell he was distracted and not at all concise and by the end of it you wondered what he had just said because it was so hard to pay attention for that long when even he himself didn't seem often to be all that interested in what he was saying.

how the gospel is comprehensive and the OT and NT blend together

he is very smart and intelectual, sometimes his sermons go in two differant dirrections, his best ones have many differant threads and they all get tied together, his bad ones just kind of unwind

At mass yesterday, Father's homily was about how we should always be prepared for the coming of Jesus, not to be caught "sleeping" as the scripture puts it. Like a house whose master has gone abroad and has left his servants in charge, not knowing when he will return.

Christianity is not a set of morals

One of the priests is a very personal homilist, the other is more vague. I prefer the personal speaker, his words go straight to my heart, he uses everyday language and he's eloquent. He's very intelligent, too.

Seems to mention how important it is to endure daily monotony of life with patience almost every Sunday.
My life is not very monotonous, so I can't help worrying if he is himself kind of fed up and advising himself as much as the congregation. But maybe they complain to him about it a lot?

I like the pastor - he is a human.
And i love him because i do.

But i dont find his homilies very inspiring. :sigh:

He usually talks about 'life or death' in the readings as tho they are about this life.
Like one week he suggested in Proverbs 31 that the woman will be rewarded at the gates of the city to mean no one would gossip about her because she is good.
:holy:

He mostly preaches on everyday stuff.

And no matter how strict the Gospel is on hell - he turns it into 'flowery' stuff and doesnt give us too much 'awe' or fear of God. Such as this past weekend.

But as i said - i still love him. I just dont happen to think he fills me up with his brand of preaching. And unfortunately after the last priest who was strict and filled the aisles - you can go to our Church at anytime now and see alot of space in the pews.

:crossrc:

I pray for the men in the cloth - its a hard job.
