I don't think I have ever read a new article about Patriarch Bartholomew that didn't include the phrase "The spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians." Do reporters just wikipedia him or something when they have to write a new article? I'm really wondering because it's word-for-word the same in EVERY SINGLE article.

Part of the reason for this is because the Ecumenical Patriarchate makes this claim for itself:

As Ecumenical Patriarch he transcends every national and ethnic group on a global level and today is the spiritual leader of approximately 250 million faithful world-wide.

I do not see the puprose of "educating" us as to what the word Pope means has anything to do with your posting this thread and either it is relevant to us in any way... Why would we "have to know" what it means? This is not OBOB the last time I checked....

I have no intention of bashing my own Patriarch to support idiocracies like the above article... which is BTW from the Vatican that oughta tell ya something...Still the missinformation is not on the Patriarch's part my friend Josiah but the media... I see no reason to bash him as he is the not the one who says it. The missconception comes from the statement "prokathemenos" that of "sitting in a council as a leader" out of honor not out of rank. If the Catholics deny such distinction and "press" or pointing out he is another pope how is this Barth problem then? Again it is a matter of the proper understanding... But again what is the purpose of those OLD NEWS ????

I grow very tired of the ecumenism between Bartholomew and the RCC. It's a shame Bartholomew's actions are most often seen by the world as representative of our entire Orthodox Church's Faith. When talking to those outside the Orthodox Church, expecially protestants, I always have to put a lot of effort into getting them past the barrier of believing Bartholomew is the Orthodox equivallent of the Pope for Roman Catholics. Before that point, I cannot reasonably talk about what the Orthodox really believe and practice where Bartholomew would seem to contradict me. There are enough misconceptions already that the West has about us that keep people from giving the Orthodox Church a serious try.

Sorry, just blowing steam.

Forgive me, a sinner,
Josiah

I grow very tired of Catholics coming in TAW and posting articles like this thinking that we are a stones throw from uniting with them. The mods really need to close threads like this because in the end all they do is ignite tensions between fellow Orthodox Christians and there is really no good that comes from that.

I hope people realize that if you don't post in a thread, the thread sinks to the bottom and then falls off the first page. In general when it falls off the first page nobody bothers to look at it anymore.

;) You guys are keeping the thread alive by posting in it.

Forget what I said. Sorry, I didn't mean to cause tension. It's the beginning of the fast, and we are more susceptable to jumping at each other's throats right now. Rather than push the issue by clarifying what I meant to say, I'd rather just set it aside for the sake of peaceful relations so we can concentrate together on the more important task of each of us becomming a worthy temple of God.

Forgive me, a sinner,
Josiah
