blackmail.

ProtectMarriage.com, the umbrella group behind a ballot initiative that would overturn the California Supreme Court decision that legalized gay marriage, sent a certified letter this week asking companies to withdraw their support of Equality California, a nonprofit organization that is helping lead the campaign against Proposition 8.

"Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will help us correct this error," reads the letter. "Were you to elect not to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in opposition to traditional marriage. ... The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published."

SAN FRANCISCO -- Leaders of the campaign to outlaw same-sex marriage in California are warning businesses that have given money to the state's largest gay rights group they will be publicly identified as opponents of traditional unions unless they contribute to the gay marriage ban, too.

Interesting. By voting for gay marriage, now you are labeled anti-traditional weddings?
I wasn't aware that voting No on Prop 8 would ban heterosexual marriages.

The idea that opposing the peremptory destruction of thousands of marriages by the state without the consent of (and indeed, against the wishes of) the couples involved can somehow be "anti-marriage" is as baffling as it is horrid.

They are not defending the sancity of Marriage, they are 'defending' the exclusivity of marriage.

Claiming copyright!

For now free use is granted!

Just want my claim to fame and chance to control this depending on how people try to spin it.

But seriously I do think this gets to the heart of the matter.

Sounds like Gay activism to me.

Something tells me the good folks over at apple will give them the one finger salute. I have been looking for an excuse to switch to Mac, looks like I just found one.

I want to be funny. What the heck here goes.

Apple is perfect. They have a queer operating system.

On the serious side, they are a big ticket item. Meaning a computer and realted stuff costs much more than McDondalds lunch. And At least Gay male housholds are above the national averages for income. Bet apple makes more on Gays who buy because this gets published than they lose from anti-gays who decline to make a purchase they woul dhave otherwise.

McDondalds might be at some risk. Health conciousness seems to run in many rahter liberal circles and that means many who would see a contribution as a good thing maight not eat there, or at least not often, no matter what.

I really do love it when mean spirited boycotts backfire. (and yes the left can have a mean spirited boycott also).

An acquaintance who works for (is employed by, as well as being committed to) Equality California had this to say, in response to a question about whether this sort of blackmail is illegal:
It's not illegal, really. That being said, there will definitely be a backlash. The main Yes on 8 groups are the Mormon Church and the Knights of Columbus (go figure, mormons and catholics working together!).

The No side has targeted donors to the Yes side as well, but they focus mostly on calling for boycotts of supporters of the Yes side. That's been fairly effective at least at cutting off funds to the Yes side from corporate donors, but they didn't demand money from those folks...just asked them to stop contributing to the Yes side. It's politics folks...
