Considering the successful commercialization of religion with its high profit margin it was only a matter of time before atheists would give it a go.

"Donate and help us spread the word of God's non-existence."

"Send us a share gift, whatever you can afford, and we will not pray for you."

(not actual quotes)

Writer Ariane Sherine suggested the idea in a Guardian Comment is Free blog last June, saying an atheist bus campaign would provide a reassuring counter-message to religious slogans threatening non-Christians with hell and damnation.

They actually have these on London buses?

"probably" no god? Somebody please rent these atheists a spine, until they can proudly proclaim that there is no god, in no uncertain terms. Who the hell writes "probably" on a bus ad?

Probably would make them Agnostics then I guess.

Because the majority of atheists do not believe there is, in no uncertain terms, no god. Most atheists fall under the "I do not believe in the existence of god(s) because there is no reason to think one does, but I am open to evidence that one does" category and not the "God definitely doesn't exist" category.

It seems some UK Christians are up in arms about this. Others have no problem, saying that if it causes people to think about deeper things it si a good thing.

If there are Churchses in the UK that preach a kind of Christianity where one is worrying and losing joy form their life this is a good thing as I see it.

Others have pointed out that Christians can buy ads too. I hope that if they do it is the smart jy filled ones who do so and stay in hte same vein. Something like:

Love God, your fellow man and enjoy what God has made.

Sherine came up with the idea after seeing a series of Christian posters on London buses. She said she visited the Web site promoted on one ad and found it told nonbelievers they would spend eternity in torment in hell.

So apparently no bus carries the message that nonbelievers will burn in Hell. There is a website that was linked to the ad that, when inspected, contains the Christian Scripture (GASP!) and says what Christians have said from DAY ONE- nonbelievers go to Hell.

I plugged in Dictionary.com what I had previously thought was the non-word "Athiest" and durned if it wasn't listed.

Did I miss something -has the official spelling of the word "atheist" recently been changed to "athiest" due to the persistent dyslexia of the religious majority - or what? :D

There is a street 'preacher' in Auckland who, on Friday and Saturday nights, shouts as loud as he can that people are going to hell. But not just in general, he points people out as they walk past and berates them. It borders on verbal abuse I think.

Anyway, I always thought it would be fun to stand outside his house one Sunday morning with a megaphone and tell him there is no god and his holy book is a fairytale. But that'd require far too much effort.

While I've never seen one on a bus here, we have quite a few of those message from god billboards from time to time. We also have a pizza chain called Hell Pizza who like to rent billboards adjacent to those ones and make amusing parodies of them, selling pizza.

Hell Pizza Competes with Godmarks
And my favourite, Advertising compaint about billboard (I especially like the response from Hell.
