350: SAUDI ARABIA QATIF WOMAN ARRESTED AND DETAINED FOR DRIVING
22 August, 2008
SAUDI ARABIA QATIF WOMAN ARRESTED AND DETAINED FOR DRIVING

AKI-Adnkronos International via Yahoo! News Tuesday 12th August 2008

QATIF: The Saudi daily, Okaz, reported that the Religious Police – agents from the Committee for the Promotion of Vice and the Prevention of Virtue – spotted and arrested a woman in the region of Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia for driving a car after other men had reported the woman. The woman was later released after her family had posted bail, and will now be put on trial. There is no law in Saudi Arabia that prevents women from driving. However, fatwas or religious edicts, have been issued by Wahhabi scholars and clerics saying it is sinful for women to drive. Conservatives argue that if women were allowed to drive, it would lead to women being able to mix freely with men, then later to corruption and the destruction of family values. Daniel: They are mixing well enough; no sweat! As for corruption; Saudi Arabia is one of the most corrupt countries in the Arab and Arab-speaking World – if not the most corrupt!
Saudi women have been continually pushing to be allowed to drive, and have asked the government to make reviewing the ban a priority. On 23rd September this year, a group of civil rights activists will formally demand that the government reinstate the right of women to drive. The date also marks Saudi Arabia's Independence Day. Daniel: Some Independence: independence for the men and dependence-in for the women and girls!

In 1991, a group of 47 women activists challenged the ban by driving through the centre of the Saudi capital Riyadh in protest. They were arrested by the religious police but later released. However, some were then suspended from their university jobs for one or two years as punishment.

So, what are God's thoughts about women drivers? Is it moral for women to drive or not?

eudaimonia,

Mark
God created women to be backseat drivers. Just ask my wife!

It used to make me mad. Then I figured out it was the created order of things.

It is amoral, neither inherently moral nor immoral. Or, in Islamic terms, halal.

so its not moral nor immoral.. why are there women getting arrested? Why are muslim men calling the police?

According to islam and current islamic affairs: its moral for a muslim man to marry an 8 year old female child.. somehow little girls are old enough to be married and have sex.. but as for adult women driving... well that one is up in the air?

Islam seems to be all over the place when it comes to morals..

Do I look like the Grand Mufti of Riyadh to you?

The collected opinions of the Grand Mufti serve as a valuable source of information on the practical application of Islamic law as opposed to its abstract formulation. The Grand Mufti's fataawa are not binding precedents in areas of civil laws regulating marriage, divorce, and inheritance. In criminal courts, the Grand Mufti's recommendations are generally not binding either.

So it looks like the Grand Mufti's opinion is a wishy-washy thing too.. seems the only absolute in Islam/koran is the existance of Jesus Christ.

Follow the truth. Seek what is unshakable.

GOD accepts you right where you are.

Well, there is your avatar …......

Does it look Saudi? Saudis don't use turbans, but keffiyehs. You know, keffiyehs, like Arafat's.

You certainly cannot lump up Islam on the practice of Saudi Arabia. The great majority of Muslims will laugh at you, it's actually an inside joke how messed up Wahabism is and how far from the true tenets of Islam they have gone. The only respect they get is due to their current geographical location coinciding with the Holy Sites of Mecca and Medina. Many historians have posited that the Saudi ruling clan isn't even from the area to begin with and had allied themselves with a local preach (Muhammad ibn Adbel-Wahab, hence Wahabism) sometime in the 18th century i believe or something along those lines. In any case, they don't forbid women from driving because "God said so", its a natural extension of their exagerated "seperation of the sexes" mentality.

Lolz..really? So is your Quran messed up when they too seem to "separate the sexes".

1) Women can't get married to her ex-husband until she marries another husband:
But if the divorce goes through the third stage, then they are not allowed to get back together unless the divorced wife marries another man and then she is allowed to remarry her previous husband, if she gets a divorce from the second husband, if they both are (still) Muslims. These are the laws of Allah and they have been clearly explained for the people who use logic and rationale. (Surah 2:230)

2) Women are stupid, and majority will go to hell.

Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 6, Number 301:
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
Once Allah's Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) o 'Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Allah's Apostle ?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion."

3) Women are like slaves and camel.
Sunaan Abu Dawud: Book 11, Number 2155:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: If one of you marries a woman or buys a slave, he should say: "O Allah, I ask Thee for the good in her, and in the disposition Thou hast given her; I take refuge in Thee from the evil in her, and in the disposition Thou hast given her." When he buys a camel, he should take hold of the top of its hump and say the same kind of thing.

4) Women are like dogs and donkey.
Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 9, Number 490:
Narrated 'Aisha:
The things which annul the prayers were mentioned before me. They said, "Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman (if they pass in front of the praying people)." I said, "You have made us (i.e. women) dogs. I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away. for I disliked to face him."

5) Female ruler will never be successful.
Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 5, Book 59, Number 709:
Narrated Abu Bakra:
During the days (of the battle) of Al-Jamal, Allah benefited me with a word I had heard from Allah's Apostle after I had been about to join the Companions of Al-Jamal (i.e. the camel) and fight along with them. When Allah's Apostle was informed that the Persians had crowned the daughter of Khosrau as their ruler, he said, "Such people as ruled by a lady will never be successful."

6) Women cannot be straightened.
Sahih Muslim: Book 008, Number 3467:
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported: Woman has been created from a rib and will in no way be straightened for you; so if you wish to benefit by her, benefit by her while crookedness remains in her. And if you attempt to straighten her, you will break her, and breaking her is divorcing her.

7) Women can be a part of evil omen.
Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 62, Number 30:
Narrated Abdullah bin 'Umar:
Allah's Apostle said, "Evil omen is in the women, the house and the horse.

8) Women are harmful than man.
Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 62, Number 33:
Narrated Usama bin Zaid:
The Prophet said, "After me I have not left any affliction more harmful to men than women."

10) Women are treated as breeding machine.
Sunaan Abu Dawud: Book 11, Number 2045:
Narrated Ma'qil ibn Yasar:
A man came to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and said: I have found a woman of rank and beauty, but she does not give birth to children. Should I marry her? He said: No. He came again to him, but he prohibited him. He came to him third time, and he (the Prophet) said: Marry women who are loving and very prolific, for I shall outnumber the peoples by you.

11) The stipulations most entitled to be abide by.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 62, Number 81:
Narrated 'Uqba:
The Prophet said: "The stipulations most entitled to be abided by are those with which you are given the right to enjoy the (women's) private parts (i.e. the stipulations of the marriage contract)."

12) Women are cursed if they do not spend the night with their husbands.
Sahih Bukhari: Book 008, Number 3366:
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: When a woman spends the night away from the bed of her husband, the angels curse her until morning.

13) Men can have intercourse with female captives even if they are married.
Abu Said al-Khudri said: "The apostle of Allah sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them. They defeated them and took them captives. Some of the Companions of the apostle of Allah were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur’anic verse, "And all married women (are forbidden) unto your save those (captives) whom your right hand possesses". That is to say, they are lawful for them when they complete their waiting period." (Surah 4:24)

Yuh I see so much respect for women already in Islam.

It might be an inside joke to you, but I see nothing to laugh at in the oppression of perfectly godly Saudi women, going about their lawful business. It is not good enough to say this is Saudi, and nowhere else. Wahabism is spreading from Saudi, through teachers sent to mosques worldwide, as I am sure you are aware. Which results in the ludicrous behaviour of some Moslem women in my country wandering around dressed like bedou wives.

If they were to visit their own cultures; Bangladesh, Pakistan or wherever, they would find nobody who would even dream of dressing in such a way, let alone regarding it as 'Islamic'. It is not. It is political, and it is Wahabi, and it is spreading. And a central part of it is the oppression of women, by which is meant any girl over 9, and some younger.

These teachings are not limited, they are spreading like a cancer, and it is Islam which will wither away as a result, not any other faith.

Forget the practice....look at the teachings ....They are opressive to women...and there is nothing you or any other muslim can do . Like I said before the teaching reflects the practice. As long as you have these teachings there is no way you can claim that "some" are not practicing them... It just cannot happen. Whatever is written as a teaching is what is practiced... and becomes a norm and a standard.
If you say that women are like dogs then they can be treated as such.

HAHAHAHA. The Sahih Bukhari quoters make me laugh. But i guess its our fault for letting our so-called "rulers" look at these as authentic documents. THey're full of hearesay and rumors of things that were said. If you read the Qur'an itself, all those Hadiths you just quoted will seem sooo contradictory to the message of Islam. And so should have been abrogated, but its nice to see you went on answering-islam.com and just copy pasted ;)

They are regarded as authentic by Muslim scholars. Are you a Muslim scholar with credentials to disagree with them? Or are you practicing a little kitman, trying to fool the infidel?

Kitman used to work before the internet gave us all access to your holy writings. It doesn't work any more.

Or maybe you are simply ashamed of what Bukhari recorded Muhammed as saying.

Or maybe you will tell us that Muhammed wrote one thing in the Quran and then taught error when he spoke.

You cannot practice them and tell us they are null it is either one or the other... It does not work like that in the real world. When you sign up a contract you also have to read the small print.... hehehehe....
