John McCain considers Jewish running mate

Eric Cantor, 45, would be a dramatic choice for Mr McCain, who is running almost level with Barack Obama in national polls but whose aides believe he needs to shake-up the White House race if he is to prevail in November's general election.
Aides to Mr McCain revealed that Mr Cantor, the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives, had been asked to submit documents as part of a rigorous vetting process to hunt out any closet skeletons.
He joins a shortlist believed to include Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor and Mr McCain's bitter rival during the Republican primaries, Tim Pawlenty, Minnesota governor, and Rob Portman, a former Ohio congressman and budget director in the Bush administration.
Of the four, Mr Cantor would be by far the most exiting - though potentially risky - choice. A prodigious fundraiser with a young, photogenic family, support from evangelical Christians and strong backing from hard-line conservatives, he would shore up many of Mr McCain's weaknesses.
Mr Cantor would be the first Jewish vice-president, an historic milestone that Senator Joe Lieberman just missed in 2000 when Al Gore lost to George W Bush by 567 votes.
It was probably Mr Lieberman's presence on the ticket that enabled Mr Gore to get so close in Florida, where Jewish voters are an important factor. Mr Lieberman has since left the Democratic party and joined forces with Mr McCain. Campaigning by both Mr Lieberman for a McCain-Cantor ticket in Florida could give the Republican a powerful advantage in the swing state.

Personally, I'm not voting for the white-haired old guy. I'm voting for Paris for Prez! :p ^_^

Okay--okay--just kidding!!

I've never heard of Eric Cantor and I do stay up with politics a bit. Let me see if I can find any RELIABLE info! (rolleyes)

Please - would you take our Mr Brown? He comes with a ready made cabinet, he's quite a capable fund-raiser (taxation has gone up soooo much since he became chancellor and then PM). He's one of those politicians where he does things and it's years before the mud hits the fan - and then the clever bit - he just blames it on your credit crunch (if that's not there, no problem, he'll create one to order, or just let a thriving bank go to the wall etc.).

He's young(ish) straight talking (well, some of the time - well, not much of it actually), clever (too clever his opponents say), goes on holiday in tiny English towns so that he looks as if he's in empathy with all those he's screwed down, sorry, I mean his faithful electorate -well, that's where the only one lives actually.

PS We don't really need any of your folk in exchange, thanks.

Hey, my husband is Republican!

I usually vote a Republican ticket, but have been
too lazy to re-register from Democrat to Republican.

My husband the political junkie is quite impressed with this guy and would
love to see him be VP. But he said the chances are probably nil as he is
too far down the food chain to really be considered. Hopefully hubby is
wrong...

kivi says: The ones we need to shoot are the Bush/Cheney anti Constitutional, anti American values, pro Big Oil and pro the most massive transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in the history of the US.

As far as I am concerned, they (meaning Dems, Reps, Indies and
anything in between) are nothing but self serving power hungry
people.

I don't like most of them, but you gotta choose something.

right

and it's all good and wonderful to point out the failings of the past office holders, but at this point it's shoulda woulda coulda... we have to move beyond name calling to find a better way... and it's not about party lines, but about integrity, which I agree with Chava, is severely lacking in all groups these days.

yeah, God was with bush too right (at least he says he is :))

let's realize that no matter who we pick, that he will be human, fragile, and likely, simply because the way the country is run in all elected government, will also pander to special interests (though they will be different ones if he is a democrat vs. republican)

Anyone who is voting for Mccain is going to be sorry. Vote for Obama, God is with that man. Obama will win, and finally that ungodly war with Iraq will end.

Obama ain't gonna be able to end the war any sooner than anyone else
can. To believe so is simplistic.

And the war is the least of our problems. I am more worried about
which candidate can best handle national security, the economy,
energy issues, and who they want to appoint for supreme
court openings that will occur during their term.
