Question about prayer

Hi all,
I am new here and have thorougly enjoyed reading the posts. But now I have a question I was hoping I could get some insight on.

How do I know when God is answering my prayer, and how do I "hear" Him? I will pray for certain things, or about certain things, such as guidance. Well, how do I know when God is answering me? How do I know I will not miss His answer? For instance, I pray that God helps me be the kind of wife He wants me to be with my husband, so that we have an even stronger marriage. Well.... what next?
Or I ask him to let me know what He wants me to do in the church that builds my relationship with Him, and servees Him. Such as Sunday school teacher, etc. And I just don't know the answer.

Am I not giving it enough time? Am I not listening closely enough?

I would just like some thoughts on this topic. And I would like to know some experiences you all have had, if you want to share.

Thanks, and Love in Christ,
Stephanie

Stephanie you have a willing heart and that is the first step. BTW God answers all prayer in one of three ways. (OK) or (NO) or (OK, but not right now)

As for being a better wife, I can not imagine him saying "NO". Maybe he is answering in small bites at a time and you just don't see it. As for wanting to serve the cause of Christ, oh yea you'll get an answer to that and it will be like a billboard dropping on your head.

The main thing is to be willing and patient. We are like tools in a tool box. When I'm working on my car and my pliers jumps up and say I'm gonna help. I'm gonna grab something and pull hard. I might say I don't need anything grabbed right now but thanks anyway I'm using my sockets right now, I,ll get to you soon.........You get the idea, don't you?

I couldn't have said it better. Just don't stop praying and have faith. He hears you.

I prayed for something I really wanted for years. God waited for 13 years to give her to me. And she was worth the wait.

God Bless you Stephanie!

Mat 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Jam 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your lusts.

1Jo 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1Jo 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

I hope the verses above help.

Ask and we shall receive, as long as its according to his will.

However, you are asking for specific things in your post:

1) To be a better wife - God cannot make you become a better wife. He can help you by making you stronger, by helping you keep from sin and temptation, but you have to put in some work. Read books. Talk to other older wives. Learn from your mother. From your friends.

2) Wanting to know his will for you in church - you need to figure out where your interests are, what your gifts and talents are - usually God does not put a person into a ministry they have no interest or giftings in. Do you have a desire to be a Sunday School teacher? God can put a desire in people's hearts to guide them. Speak to your pastor. Speak to your husband - he is your spiritual head in the family.

As for giving enough time - the fact that you are asking that question means you are probably giving enough time. Listen by being silent, meditate on his word, pray often.

For me, I always want to be a better wife, mother and human being. So I keep reading the Bible, which has lots of tips on those topics, as well as other books. I am a cell leader, and I had always wanted to be, so I knew it was God's will for me.

Hope this helps!

It's the eternal question: How do we hear from God?

In the Old Testament, God spoke to His people with an audible voice. Now He still does, but because He has given us His Word in the form of Scripture, He speaks to us always through His word. So if you are looking for God to answer a question of yours, seek His Word.

Also, God can speak to us through people who have been placed as spiritual overseers in our lives. People like our pastor, our parents etc. can be of help to guide us too.

those are awesome answers!

god cant and wont ignore your prayers no matter what they are if your hearts right and you beleive. so always know that they are heard and will receive an asnwer!

another thing that i beleive people dont think about is this,
god has unlimited supplies, power, wisdom, anything we ever needed, and he wants to give it to us! we dont really realise that, that he wants us to have more then we can imagine having! that includes power, wisdom, prosperity, provision etc, all things.

say god is like santa clause, and puts gifts down the chimney, or that he sends his things down a pathway to you.
like water going through a hose pipe.

the hose pipe is connected to a huge well, its full of water, as heavon is full of provision.
but sometimes WE GET KINKS IN OUR LINE, and instead of getting the amount given WE ONLY GET TRINKELS AND DROPS ON OUR SIDE OF THE HOSE!
we christians ask for things, and according the word he will answer so he must be answering, so he sends them to us, but the line or pathway has kinks in it!

sometimes if weve prayed and it seems the god isnt answering, we need to stop asking for it and beleive hes sent it, and realise there may be something in our lives that makes a kink or blockadge in the line.

when it seems your prayers arent working, cast that thought down, its impossible to be true, god either has answered, or is going to soon if you beleive.
so look at yourself.

are in the place were you can hear gods voice?
do you fellowship enough with him to hear his voice?
do you have too much flesh or gunk in your line for your answers to get through?
is there a sin of somesort?
are you simply neglecting something god has already said?

keep asking, hell answer if he hasnt already, and make sure you dont have kinks that keep his answer from getting to you.

one thing id reccomend is go on a fast!
IT TAKES THAT FLESH OFF!
fast something, and spend the time you use to give to that thing and give it to god.
its removing the flesh, and putting god in its place.

another thing to think about is this,
god cant come in if your already full, he will only come in when there is a vacancy.
you must make room for the answers to your prayers, and that could mean a fast, or quitting a job, or giving him more time in prayer or study or whatever.

ask him if there a kink in your line.
"there is nothing hidden that wont be revealed", hell show you that thing.

and sometimes god doesnt answer untill we get desperate. sometimes he wants to see how much you want it, he doesnt give his best to just anybody.
thats one reason it seems some peoples prayers are stronger then ours, maybe theyve done more then we have and gods rewarding them.

Thank you so much for all your answers! I guess I wanted the clarification and support that God truly does hear me.

I wanted to say that I know I am truly blessed. I have a wonderful husband who is a great father to our precious one year old. I could go on and on about how He's blessed me. And our marriage is good. But to be pretty blunt, I have a lot of "mouth". But so does my husband. And when we get into an argument, there is no spiritual element, it is PURE flesh. So I am trying to stop on my end by praying to God to help me control my tongue, and become the wife that I should be. But as soon as Chris (husband) says something, there I go. We dont' fight all the time, but when we get into petty arguments, it can blow up, and my feelings get hurt. Chris has a very sharp tongue as well. I guess the reason this is on my heart now is because of my daughter. I want her to grow up without hearing any arguments. Or at least ones where we sound like such heathens. :)

I will admit I need to be in His word more. That is my New Years Resolution.

I know God hears my prayers a lot. But then I will question Him and myself by saying "was that really God, or was it going to happen anyway". I realize that is Satan. But I hate it when I doubt like that!! It makes me SO MAD. Why don't I just accept what God gives me and not ever doubt? And sometimes I don't want to ask for too much because I don't think I should. I have read the "Prayer of Jabez" and I realize it says that we should ask. But I feel unworthy to ask for so much. I think if things are going good all the time, somethign is bound to happen.

Okay, I've rambled now. Thank you for all your encouraging words!

Stephanie it may help to realize you are not alone. Many of us have the same problems to a greater or lesser degree. You heard it said "a soft answer turns away wrath" but how to we get where a soft answer comes out instead of a sharp or hard one. It has to become a habit. Breaking the old, building the new. Rom. 7:14 and on, tells us that even paul had the same kind of problems we have. It's one of those ongoing things we all have. As we practice being more like what Christ wants us to be like the easier it becomes. It still is at times going to be tough. You have to be the first one to bend. Several times maybe, then Chris will start to see what's happening. It can be very tough, but this life is tough in many ways and dealing with it is part of our learning and moulding process.

As for doubt. I treat it like this.
Mark 9:24
24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
(KJV)

Pray for more faith. Life for me has been faith building. Bible study has been faith building. Stepping out on the faith I already have has also given me greater faith.

Hey, I know how you feel, I am in the same boat!

Eph 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath.

Always sort out arguments and make up on the same day before the "sun goes down". This promotes resolution of conflict, and avoids having things buried inside your spirit, which may come up again later on.

God bless your marriage. It is hard work, so work hard, but it is worth it!

Hi Stephanie! I ,too, have read the "Prayer of Jabez" and have felt the same as you have about asking. I don't feel as though I deserve God's goodness but that's a lie from satan. God wants to bless His children!! He really does! I have been praying the "Prayer of Jabez" and have been so blessed with many things. Our God is a God of love! And He willing gives us what we ask, if it's according to His will. So ASK away! Don't be afraid! Don't let the devil rob you of your DAILY BLESSINGS - open the boxes of gifts that God gives you freely.

First thing First, you must humble yourself and have faith that your pray will get answered, God works in different ways....I'm sure you heard this saying right ?

I will give you some exmaples: Throught..Visions..Dreams..People..Bible Verses..To get to the point don't take anyone for a joke seek first to understand then be understood.

Also when you pray the Holy Spirit within you can and will help you pray if you let the Holy Spirit take over your tongue, a lot of people don't know what they are saying when they pray in Tongue they get scared and listen to others when they say that people who pray in Tongues have evil spirits.

Beware what you say about people having evil Spirit when you see or hear someone pray in Tongues, in fact I will give you a verse how dangerous it is: Mark 3:29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is quilty of an eternal sin - 30 because they were saying, "He has an unclean Spirit."

I hope this information helps you understand more.
