• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Yes! This bugs me soo much! When I try to explain how I feel (to my husband and father especially) they just don't get it. I get the whole 'get over it' thing. Yea I definitely think people not living with it just don't understand how we feel. They don't get the sweaty palms, palpitations, blurred vision, etc. in normal everyday events. It really does hurt when all you want is some support, but people just don't understand. Sometimes it makes me feel crazy, but I think God for forums like this to know i"m not the only one going through this.

Let's face the facts...no one knows EXACTLY how anyone else feels whatsoever. Everyone has a similar feeling or two, maybe a lot of similar feelings, the same disorder, same sort of life, same sort of feelings in certain situations, but NO ONE will EVER truly understand what it's like. Because no one can ever know anyone and no one can ever know something that is not within themself.

true...but can someone not knowing how chronic anxiety feels make judgments. For example "It can't be that bad, just get over it." "Just live with it"
For people not knowing what it feels like...they sure act like they do. It personally hurts me when I hear my dad tell me "just get over it". Obviously he doesn't know how it feels to be paralyzed with fear and pain you can't control for no reason.
That's what we're talking about.

I fully know how that feels and it's so not cool! I always get the feeling that alot of the people close to me think I'm making it up or just using it as excuse to get out of doing something. I only got diagnosed with anxiety at the end of last year and it was a huge relief because before then I thought I was just crazy and nobody understood what was wrong with me let alone myself. I thought it would be different now that there's a name to what's going on with me but it's not much different. Everyone's just like, "are you better yet?" like it's supposed to just dissappear. It gets me down alot but I try really hard not to let it.

I'm fine with people not getting it in the sense that I wouldn't wish it on them. However, people should be capable of being considerate and understanding that what I'm going through is not the same as what they experience. It isn't any different than being considerate when someone else has a physical health problem and understanding they might have a tougher time participating in some activities.

A lot of people are very considerate but some are not.

It would be great if people were more understanding about social anxiety, but it's kinda doubtful; social anxiety is a widespread, but misunderstood - and sometimes misdiagnosed - problem.

But only God knows what the future could bring - this is unrelated, but until the late 1970s, alcoholism was still the kind of problem that everybody knew about, but no one discussed.
