Hi y'all.

Protinus said I could come here and ask a question. Before I do, please understand that this is not any kind of attempt at mockery or EoG debate. I really am curious about this.

Could someone please explain the concept of filoque? What I've read on-line makes absolutely no sense to me.

Thanks.

Hi Garnet!!

It is actually Filioque, an early Christian debate about the Son and the the uniqueness of the Spirit. There was always the contention that "the Son" was somehow less than the Father because the Holy Spirit did not intercede as facilitator between the two. It is a translational issue in the early Church between Gaul, Spain and actually Greek, from which the original writings came.

Welcome!!

Hey, howcome she gets to be the neighborhood atheist? ;)

Hey Garnet!

Filioque = filio + que; filio being dative (?) of filius (son), thus "and of the son"

I think. My latin is essentially non-existent. But it's a little more existent than my theology, so that's my contribution.

Hiya Loki!

*grins* Well, I could be that scary neighborhood atheist that only comes out of her basement dwelling on nights of the full moon.

the son is equal to the father?

Yes and no, to put it very simply, Christ is equal to the Father in the nature of spirit as is the Holy Spirit, but Christ has different rank in the Trinitarian view. But the question of Filioque comes from how the the Holy Spirit comes into the picture. The Catholic Church belives that the Holy Spirit proceeds through the Son AND the Father, born of spirit. Part of the schism that was created with the Eastern Church is that they believed the The Holy Spirit proceeded only through Christ.
