I just saw a Google Ad for "Orthodox Pilgrimages". Does Orthodoxy have certain holy sites, as the Roman Catholics have Guadalupe and Lourdes and such? (I guess I should say other than in Jerusalem.)

Theres great many pilgrimage sites within the Orthodox world. Here is a small sampling:

1. Panagia Evangelistria Church and Museums - Tinos, Greece

2. Church of Virgin Mary Lagouvarda (Virgin Mary of the snakes)

3. Plaka: Patmos: Monistary of St. John Entrance

4. stcatherinesmonastery - St. Catherine's Monastery

5. Meteora, Greece - the amazing clifftop monasteries

Lets not forget pilgrimages to the ancient patriarchates. The above are a sample of pilgrimage sites in greece (except for St Catherines which is on Mt Sinai). All traditional Orthodox countries have their share of holy sites

Aegina (Greek Island) has the monastery St. Nektarios built for nuns. His relics are there. There are many sites in Greece where St. Paul preached. Lots of stuff that I don't have in front of me, but my parents and sister go to Greece about every other year to every couple years and go to each historical religious site there. There's many. The Church of the 100 doors, St. Elias Monastery, St. Andrew's Cathedral (with his relics, beautiful church that is considered one of the largest in the world).

The places that come to mind that I would like to make pilgramages to one day would be Mt. Athos, St. Catherine's Monastery, Meteora, Patmos, Valaam Monastery (Russia), Sihastria Monastery (Romania), Neamţ Monastery (also Romania), and Jerusalem.

in the US we have great places like St Anthony's Monastery in Arizona, Platina in California, Jordanville in New York, and Spruce Island in Alaska to name a few. in California also is the Joy of All Who Sorrow Cathedral in San Francisco (I think) where the relics of St John Maximovich are.

My perception is that, unlike in the RC West, the Orthodox tend not to have pilgrimages to sites that are holy due to some specific miracle that took place there, but moreso (as you maybe could tell) to sites that are holy and miraculous because of the fact that they are Churches or monasteries. I am sure there are exceptions, but generally the more popular ones are going to be monasteries and burial sites of saints. I guess I am just saying that the nature of these places are different than the sites you mentioned (Guadalupe, Lourdes...) so I am not sure our answers is what you were looking for. The closest thing I can think of is The Holy Sepulchre where every year on Pascha the Holy light (from the Holy Spirit) miraculously lights everyone's candles. But, the difference is that it isn't a Holy Site becuase of that miracle... the Miracle takes place becuase it is inherently one of the Holiest sites on Earth. So, it's still quite different from Lourdes and the like in that way.

Yeah, I think you summed it up well. That's the difference I was trying to get at. I guess a Christian pilgrimage is whatever one wants to make it, whether for miracles, healing, beauty or history, or to be close to a place which is holy for one reason or another.

If you happen to be near the West Coast of the USA, make a pilgrimage to San Francisco and visit the Cathedral there to see the relics of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco. A) Gorgeous Church... B) Excellent and recent Saint of America... C) Complete relics - the whole body is there and the presence of God is palpable.
