1. Did he not take the covenant between God and Abraham, Issac and Jacob seriously?

2. Was he unaware of the covenant and an angel supernaturally reveal what Ziporah was supposed to do? (seems unlikely to me that he would not know to circumsize his son even though he grew up as an Egyptian)

3. Did he think that since he married outside the house of Israel that he was somehow excluded.

Is there another explanation?

Hi again young lady. You find in Exodus that Moses sons were never really referred to as Moses sons, but his wife sons. Don't know why.

Exodus 4:25 Moses father in law did the deed.
Does this help

AS always

Sheesh...I need a more manly avatar I guess. (already changed it once)

Moses' father in law did the deed???? Where did you get that...it clearly says that Zipporah cut off her sons foreskin.

Now I was not aware that the Scripture always refers to them as her sons. Interesting.

Does that mean that there is a distinction being made between Moses and Jethro's households?

"A bridegroom of blood" what was Zipporah thinking when she said this. Did she already know about circumcision and the covenant from Moses? Does it imply that there was a disagreement about circumsizing their sons?

Are you saying that Scripture could be implying that these sons are not Moses' sons. If that were the case Zipporah's statement would not make much sense.

Gee I am very sorry I said father in Law. I was tired and have Congestive heart failure and get tire often.

It was his wife and from the verses, It was God who was going to Kill Moses if his son were not circumsized

So in a fit Zipporah did the act and tossed what was cut off at Moses feet.
I really don't see in the scriptures any love lost between Moses and his wife. There was a bond between Moses and his father in law.

After the boys (who could have been men) where circumsized they all returned home. In chapter 18 the father in Law brings them back to Moses.

Sorry for my misquote

Why then...??? Why wait till Moses is heading back to Egypt to kill him because of uncircumsicion?

How did his wife know to circumsize them?

In what way was she processing "Surely you are the bridegroom of my blood"?

Matthew Henry's commentary on this passage:

"God met Moses in anger. The Lord threatened him with death or sent sickness upon him, as the punishment of his having neglected to circumcise his son. When God discovers to us what is amiss in our lives, we must give all diligence to amend it speedily. This is the voice of every rod; it calls us to return to Him that smites us."

Here he implies that they did not take the covenant of God seriously. It could be added that Moses compromised because of his wife's traditions.

The Message seems to suggest that Zipporah was suprised / suddenly realized that since he (Moses) was circumsized that perhaps his sons should be as well.

In any effect...I think it is interesting that blood is mentioned. The sheding of the blood of his son is what saved him.

Do we really know what was going through Zipporah mind at the time she took the sharp stones to HER sons. (Why didn't Moses do it)

If you go to Num 12 you will find that Moses was a very humble man.
Do you think that maybe Moses slowly and humble speaking to her about circumsizion. Do we really know?
She could have just had it! or she could have been shocked,

We also have the scriptures saying HER SONS. She may have been a head strong women living with a humble man.

Why was God going to wait and kill Moses on the way back to Egypt? I really don't know, but God may have been working on Moses wifes heart or Moses heart.

What is really hard to understand is Moses had a real bad temper, but yet God said he was the most humble man he knew. God Put a lot on Moses over the years to make him a MAN.

There is so much un said about the men and women in the bible that should be looked on. What most people today do not understand is in the Bible they were just like you and I.

I suspect it is important in a time contextual sense, but I am not sure why. I know things don't just happen in Scripture. God does things at certain times in certain ways for a reason.

For Example: It is not just coincidence that Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver into slavery by his brothers and that the main brother who suggested it was named Judah. Or Abraham, when he went to sacrifice Issac and the journey took three days.

Joseph's enitire life, as well as Abraham and many others lives are full of types and shadows of things that would come. I think this incident with Moses and his wife and boys is no different. Even in the text it is quite abrupt. It comes out of nowhere and is resolved and not mentioned or even hinted at again.

Excerpt from Love the Lord Bible Studies: (used with permission)

Exodus 4:24 "And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the
LORD met him, and sought to kill him."

It appears that God's anger at Moses was for a very serious
offense, and the Lord was to bring swift punishment. Probably, God
struck him very sick. It appears from the next few verses, that Moses
had listened to his heathen wife, and had not circumcised his 2nd son
on the 8th day, as Abraham had agreed to do in Genesis.

God keeps covenant with His people, but expects His people to keep covenant with
Him. This child was, probably, born after God's conversation on the
holy mountain and just before this trip was begun, because this anger
seems to be suddenly kindled against Moses. Moses' wife, as you can
easily see in the following Scriptures, did not approve of this Hebrew
practice. She thought it to be barbarian. Moses should not have
listened to his wife. He was the head of the house, and he knew very
well the importance of keeping the Abrahamic covenant with God. Many a
man's downfall is when he listens to bad advice from his wife, it
is a very sad thing in our society today, that not many men come to
church. They leave the spiritual obligations to their wives. God is
not pleased with this.

I am happy, though, that the women are keeping it going.
We see here in verse 25, that Zipporah knows what the
problem was and to save Moses' life, she performed the circumcision
herself. If the man does not fulfill his duty to God, the wife must do
it to save their family.

Exodus 4:25 "Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the
foreskin of her son, and cast [it] at his feet, and said, Surely a
bloody husband [art] thou to me."

Here ,we see Zipporah performing the actual circumcision to save
Moses' life, while all the time. she was angry with him for this blood
covenant with God. She actually threw the cut off skin at Moses' feet
in contempt. It was as if she disapproved of Moses as a husband, because
of his belief in God. This knife blade was made of stone, instead of
metal, to keep down infection.

Exodus 4:26 "So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband
[thou art], because of the circumcision."

At first, here, she was speaking to God, asking him to let Moses
go. She expressed her dislike, again, for the practice of circumcision.

I've just had to study Ecclesiastes recently, and one of the points that book makes repeatedly is that we don't know why God does what God does. I don't know if that's the slightest bit helpful. Ecclesiastes also says God made us want to understand these things, even though we never can.
