Dude I am a TSA screener and although not perfect we do catch on average about 20 guns a week in the checkpoints across the country. They also caught that fellow in Orlando a few months ago with bomb parts (all of them) in his checked baggage. Btw he was caught before he got to the checkpoint due to the diligence of BDO (behavior detection officers).
Actual gun owner and operator error led to that. Having armed pilots is something that is supposed to be a benefit to the passengers.
I'd rather not debate TSA rules here though. This is politics at CF not the TSA blog. Btw I really think it would be a good idea if you went and read the tsa.gov site and the blog and get some more information.
