Is everyone on a public computer?

How would you figure if they are logged-off anyway? Maybe they are just hopping from sub-forum to sub-forum?

I tend to restart my browser every few sites to keep it clear of cookies and whatnot. Since I use firefox that'll clear my login status as a side effect. Maybe it's total paranoia, but since I only catch 1 or viruses a year, I'll stick with it until it's proven innefective.

I'm on a laptop at home but I'm only on as time allows. Sometimes I just pop in to see if anything exciting is going on and if not I find something else to do.

I wouldn't say paranoid, I would say that you are trying to rationalise your possible OCD.

Deleting cookies would stop you getting the flu.

Heh, I'll leave my browser open for hours. Haven't caught a computer virus for, oh, 4 years, I think? And that was only because I hooked up my computer to the Internet while the msblaster virus was going around and before I updated Windows or installed my firewall (because I was logging onto the Internet to do just that!). Before that, I don't think I caught one for over six years. Basically I've never had virus problems since I had my own computer, except that one time while reinstalling Windows on a brand new hard drive (4 years ago).

The real key, it seems, to not catching viruses is:
1. Don't use IE.
2. Don't use MS Outlook/Outlook Express.
3. Have a personal firewall.
4. Keep Windows updated, or don't use Windows.
5. Avoid following links in e-mails unless you know the source (and even then be wary: e-mail viruses send themselves to everybody on your addressbook, so the source still may be somebody you know...fortunately viruses are usually quite easy to pick out).
6. Don't open attachments from people you don't know. Even things like images and documents have been known to include viruses, by exploiting vulnerabilities in various programs.
7. Virus-check things you download unless you know the source.
8. Be especially careful when downloading anything dodgy.
9. Oh, yeah, and have a virus scanner active.

I think that about covers it.

I hop on the site take a look at what threads i'm watching then check out a few forums and then jet.

This wouldn't be your latest pet peeve, if you would just chill out a hair bit and stop lathering yourself up by checking these things.

My PC's been up for nearly two weeks, but my browser's only been open for a day and 8 hours. The way I avoid viruses - don't use Windows!

Following similar precautions to Chalnoth, I've not had a virus issue in over four years either.

The exception was one the university network once caught, which managed to infect first my USB stick, then my own computer. My virus checker caught it pretty swiftly, but the stick was not so easy to purge and kept reinfecting my computer.

All because of the university network.

I am not trying to pick a fight with you. Some of your posts come across surly including this thread. Other posts in the past, I am not sure if you flamed me or another poster or not. Others exchanges were pleasant or humorous.

I am replying to a thread you posted publically. You are not a moderator and the judge of what is appropriate or not. It is ironic you started a thread to criticize someone else, but you can't handle criticism yourself.

I didn't actually mean a whole different website, just a different board, here on these premises. After all if you hop from C&E to GA it should show you no longer in user list at the top of the C&E forum.

(Oh and anyway, I think they have disposed of the feature that shows who currently also reads the same thread.)
