Really there is no evidence presented by anyone that North America is planning anything resembling the EU. There may be some working together on matters of economics and mutual defense, but there seem to be no ideas for open borders, an amerodollar, a continental assembly that could pass laws over all nations, or anything resembling any of this.

Come on... the amero.

Of all currencies to unite the three countries into one, WHY use a name that's so similar to the Euro.

What's next, the Afro? The Asio?

Ok, Im seeing a lot of yadda yadda yadda about the North American Union and such

But what no one has yet been able to really explain is, why is this such a big deal? So Canada, Mexico, and the US are looking at uniting for economic purposes. Why is this an issue?
The American economy has been so mismanaged that the politicians need to divert attention toward foreign "scapegoats."

One could make an argument that some degree of merging between Mexico and the United States has already occurred. Our corporations tap Mexico's labor here and in Mexico, and millions of Mexicans now live and work in America while maintaining at least nominal loyalty to Mexico. Spanish has become a de facto second language in much of the American Southwest.

As far as Canada, America and Canada have been effectively joined at the hip for over a century.

Guys, um, the idea that a hypothetical North American Union is getting attention from important leaders is a myth. Almost nobody in the mainstream wants to do this.

Nobody in the mainstream wants illegal immigrants in the US either but guess what.

My point exactly. The formation of a "NAU" is already underway. It just hasn't been made official.

I can't agree with this. For all politicians say that they will be tough on illegal immigration, the fact is that there is no real support for solving the problem. There are numerous, relatively simple steps that could make illegal immigration much harder.

One example is to actually make employers verify that those they wish to hire (and employees) have valid Social Security numbers (that it matches the name of the applicant). The system is in place to do it all ready (and has been for several years) and requires only a couple of minutes to complete. Yet this system has never been made mandatory for businesses, likely because business and the politicians they contribute to are unwilling to give up this source of cheap labor. And face it, if you take away the jobs (especially if you extend this to housing), there is no reason for illegals to immigrate.

Haven't we already united for economic prosperity? NAFTA, anyone?

As to the NAU, if it were established, it would be the end of our soveriegnty, as well as Canada's as Mexico's.

Mehhh... Actually it'd just mean that Canada would be our 51st State, and Mexico would be the 52nd. And that's not altogether different than the way things already are.

And, like most government projects, is full of errors. I was dead for 7 years (I only knew about it for just over a year). I would not have been able to get a job during that time. I actually had a fraud investigation opened on me. The police called 2 of my employers to check on me. It was a nice little Catch-22, I couldn't get the forms of ID needed to prove I was not dead because I was dead. All because some data-entry person hit the wrong button or clicked to wrong box in the SSA.

A company that does check names against socials refused to hire a friend of mine because he didn't check out because the SSA had misspelled his name. When you query the database it doesn't come back with a name or number, that would make identity theft too easy. It comes back with a yes or no. And in his case, the names didn't match, once again, because of a clerical error. It took him over a year to get it fixed.
