Since we'd be doing it in a church parking lot, probably, I guess it's okay to post this here.

So I've been becoming really excited about the idea of sharing. I think that it would be the best way to bring together the community, bring together new and old friends, help fight signs of poverty, and rid a lot of us of our own ever growing excess.

So I'm heavily considering a share-a-thon. My thoughts would be to pass out lots of flyers, contact newspapers, contact news programs, and go to other various community events to talk about it.

What would your ideas be? What are some things we should do? How do you think things should be set up?

I'm thinking about making basically the motto of the event and there to be literally, one rule that states "There is enough for everyone's need, but not nearly enough for everyone's greed." If that doesn't prevent people from taking too much, then we will just have to get over it.

You're talking about having people bring stuff they don't want and displaying it in a church parking lot, with everyone having the ability to take whatever they want in exchange for having made a donation? Your intent isn't very clear, that's why I ask.

When I hear "Share-A-Thon" I'm thinking community suported Christian radio doing their semi-annual fund raiser. You might want to consider giving it another name, though I can't imagine what it might be. It will avoid confusion that way. I think it's going to have to be pretty much neighborhood oriented, because the garage sale crowd could just overrun you if you're not careful.

Lol, I know. Money is an illness, and the whole point would simply be to share with other people. I'm comfortable with a Share-A-Thon or something a long the same lines. Everyone will always assume things no matter what the name, lol. I'll probably be going to some community events as a speaker if I can get it all sorted out to explain what it is and what the purpose is.

It's literally bringing --while i'm considering making the first one focus primarily on clothes -- things that they either do not want or that they want to give to other people. All I can do is pray for those who are simply there out of greed to re-think, I think that rest is in God's hands.

I appalud your heart sister, it is truly in the right place. Our Lord Jesus Christ never looked at a person's wealth, or lack thereof, as a measure of a man or a woman.

I suggest very highly that you get a book called Revolution: The Story of the Early Church, written by Gene Edwards. It is the beginning of the Book of Acts that reads like a book which describes the events of the early church through the eyes of an eye witness to the events described in the biblical account. It's not scripture nor does it claim to be, but it does help you better understand the context of the events that unfolded during the years that the church began.

During this time the believers in Jerusalem were called followers of The Way, a sect of Judaism, and when the Holy Spirit fell on the 3,000 on the Day of Pentecost, they remained in Jerusalem. For years they helped each other in every way way they could so they could stay there. You see many of them had travelled from foreign lands to attend a feast at the Temple when Pentecost happened, and didn't plan on staying in Jerusalem. It just happened.

What also happened was that persecution followed to scatter the believers so that the gospel would be carried throughout the Roman Empire (the known world).

My personal feeling is that we are commanded to share the love that God gave us when He gave us His son, and opportunities to give back that love are abundant. Problem is that the people who come into our lives are difficult cases that nobody wants to deal with. People with real problems, real broken hearts, real poverty and real addictions to name just a few.

Like I said I applaud your heart in this matter, but as a mature Christian of over 25 years, I also can tell you from experience that God works with us were we are. There is usually no need to go any further than where we are in order to prepare ourselves for a greater and larger work outside of that sphere of influence. If you can handle the hurting, the helpless and the broken hearted where you are, then and only then will you be ready to expand that to include perfect strangers in a broader and larger scope.

If you can't afford the book I mentioned I would gladly send you a copy. Then, after you've read it, re-read the first few chapters of Acts and I assure that you will see it in an entirely new light. The light it was written in, in the eyes of a 1st century witness.
