Since you answerd my question earlier, I began Belly Dancing again and I love it. I have a Belly Dancing DVD from Suhaila Salimpoure. She does alot of Belly Dancing, you can check out her website and there is a lot of Belly Dancing on Youtube.com I just like to watch the videos and since I have a sence of curiosity, I try to figure out whatever I don't know. I like Belly dancing cuase there is a challange to it,and it's not way over my head. But I like Dancing period. I'll dance to more then just Belly Dancing. hehe. But yeah. I started out using Belly Dancing becuase it 's a form of Dance like any other dance and most dancers learn alot of Dancing to get where they are now and I have a stiff body, so I decided Belly Dancing would help me to move my body and it works.

Hi
I am really excited about finding this thread. I have been doing belly dancing since November and am really enjoying it. I find it is quite a work out, but always feel good afterwards.
Our teacher has a class a week where she has beginners and then once she feels you are ready you join one of the other classes.
We are busy learning new dances at the moment, which means breaking the dances down.
One of my favourite of our dances is one we do to Enriques "ping pong" song.

There's a place that teaches it in my town, but only to women :( Ah well.
Don't know if you are still around, but if you are interested, you might want to talk to the instructors. My classes are all women, but if there are interested men, I will do a separate class. Maybe if there is interest, the same thing would happen there.

I'm sad this thread hasn't been active in several years. I'm a tribal fusion dancer and ATS dancer.

But, in case anyone has the same question as the person above, Rachel Brice just created Datura Online, where you can take individual classes or as many as you want a month via your computer, and the prices are quite good (I can go to 2 live classes for the monthly price). It's got a variety of styles and teachers from different backgrounds, including tribal, ATS, Egyptian, and caberet.

Hello everybody!

I'm hoping to gather some bellydancers here and make this sort of a generic thread to come and talk about the art. I have a few questions of my own, but I hope you'll bring up whatever you think is relevant -- I'd just like to get a conversation going with people who do this wonderful dance!

I'm a novice at it, but I love it so far. Sadly, I don't live anywhere near an instructor, so I am learning via DVD. What started as an ab workout turned into a real desire to learn belly dance. It's difficult learning on my own, but I've made some progress and I feel great. I'm trying to lose some weight, so I'm thinking that a great "prize" for reaching a goal might be to take a drive to a city that has an instructor and have a private session. Too far to go to classes, but making a day of it might be a nice reward for having worked hard.

So, do any of you more experienced gals have advice, recommendations, comments, etc? I'd be interested in your recommendations for instructional DVDs, music, websites, and books if you know of any that are good for someone starting out.

I'm trying to focus on maintaining good form and preventing back issues (I get lower back pain sometimes), so I'm particularly interested in resources that instruct on proper posture and/or developing the core muscles.

But that's enough about me -- tell me about you and how you got interested in belly dancing!

First off , I like tomention that if you Belly Dance alot, which sounds like you do, your back is going to hurt. but in order to keep it from getting really bad, you should stretch before you start, or you might injure it.

Second I know a few famouse belly dancers and they are
Rachel Brice from belly Dance Superstars and Suhaila Salimpoure and Amira More

Third - I like belly dancing too. And I like to go to a few sites based on belly dancing

TheBellyDancers.tv
And
BellyDance.com

That sounds interesting. I'd have to ask if I can get some lessons online. thanks for putting that out here.

I'm one of the few men around who is bold enough to admit he likes belly dancing.

While I do not have dance or choreography experience, I have had very limited experience in stage production. Because of that I have given several professional belly dancers on You Tube advice on how to improve the presentation of their performances. I find it remarkable as to how receptive these artists really are!
