hey gerry,

To me, "eternal life" refers to the afterlife in heaven. So in other words, once we die and enter heaven, we will then have eternal life. In this reality, we can know that we will have eternal life after we die, but this gift can be lost if we turn from God and deny him. I think differentiating between this life and the next is crucial in understanding how salvation can be lost.

We all will live eternally...its just a matter of where....

I thought it appropriate to post the modern day dictionary meaning for the word "hope". I'm not a Greek word expert, nice to see that posted here too.

hope ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hp)
v. hoped, hop·ing, hopes
v. intr.
To wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment.
Archaic. To have confidence; trust.

v. tr.
To look forward to with confidence or expectation: We hope that our children will be successful.
To expect and desire. See Synonyms at expect.

n.
A wish or desire accompanied by confident expectation of its fulfillment.
Something that is hoped for or desired: Success is our hope.
One that is a source of or reason for hope: the team's only hope for victory.
often Hope Christianity. The theological virtue defined as the desire and search for a future good, difficult but not impossible to attain with God's help.
Archaic. Trust; confidence.

Wow, i opened my bible again and it didn't bite. me! :)

Anyways, here is Jesus' own words about the meaning of eternal life. He does speak in

Jhn 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

Jhn 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

Jhn 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

And the dictionary terminology:

This expression occurs in the Old Testament only in Dan. 12:2 (R.V.,
"everlasting life"). It occurs frequently in the New Testament (Matt. 7:14;
18:8, 9; Luke 10:28; comp. 18:18). It comprises the whole future of the
redeemed (Luke 16:9), and is opposed to "eternal punishment" (Matt. 19:29;
25:46). It is the final reward and glory into which the children of God enter
(1 Tim. 6:12, 19; Rom. 6:22; Gal. 6:8; 1 Tim. 1:16; Rom. 5:21); their Sabbath
of rest (Heb. 4:9; comp. 12:22). The newness of life which the believer derives
from Christ (Rom. 6:4) is the very essence of salvation, and hence the life of
glory or the eternal life must also be theirs (Rom. 6:8; 2 Tim. 2:11, 12; Rom.
5:17, 21; 8:30; Eph. 2:5, 6). It is the "gift of God in Jesus Christ our Lord"
(Rom. 6:23). The life the faithful have here on earth (John 3:36; 5:24; 6:47,
53-58) is inseparably connected with the eternal life beyond, the endless life
of the future, the happy future of the saints in heaven (Matt. 19:16, 29;
25:46).

Ah Reeann!!! Very good work! I see you are busy fullfilling your calling! This gives me great peace of mind!

May I suggest to you one thing I believe to be of the utmost importance? Please do not allow yourself to be caught up in a situation where you will be discouraged.

Do as you are doing now. STAY in the Word and stay focused on Jesus. Always remember what happened when Peter took his eyes off Jesus!

God bless and strengthen you and give you His Peace!

I am so thrilled and blessed to see what God is doing in your life!

We are sealed by the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

THE PROMISE OF ETERNAL SECURITY

"I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." (Jn. 10:28)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (Jn. 3:16)

I know I'm going to Heaven because God has PROMISED eternal security to all who BELIEVE on His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. To "believe" on Christ is to "receive" Christ, according to John 1:12. During the spring of 1979, I repented of my sins and received Jesus Christ as my Savior. I had been lost in my sins, condemned to Hell forever (Jn. 3:18, 36). Then a man told me how I could be saved from my sins and from Hell by RECEIVING the Lord Jesus Christ. I received Christ, believing that HE ALONE could save me. I trusted in Him totally, for I knew that He was my only hope. I called upon Him to save me and He did (Rom. 10:13, 9-10). He brought me into God's family as a "son of God" (Jn. 1:12; I Jn. 3:2-3). I was a child of the devil, a child of wrath (Jn. 8:44; Eph. 2:2-3), but now I'm eternally secure as a child of God.

If I sin as a child of God, then my Heavenly Father will rebuke and chasten me , just as any good father would (Rev. 3:10; Heb. 12:4-8), but He will not condemn me with the world (I Cor. 11:32). God has promised His children ETERNAL SECURITY.

Good Post!

Spot on!
Yes we are sealed. But God gave us free will and we can brake that seal if we choose. Those that believe in Jesus will be saved (according to Jesus), so logically if they no longer believe in Jesus, they will not be saved! But I disagree with one poster here claiming that there are several conditions to be met if we are to be saved, there is only one: Believe.

I have this one dilemma though: My friends (not christians) says:"I'll just repent and receive Jesus on my deathbed, you know, just in case" - can they do this? Will they be saved?
