berlo06. you are right of course, there are many forms of Haiku.
I have a poet friend who won a national Haiku contest and won a trip to Japan. The syllable count of the Japanese language are so much different from ours, thus numerous forms of Haiku. I agree with you however, that the 5-7-5 style seems to be easier to accomplish. Welcome to this forum! I, too, am new here. Have a great day! Dee

oncewaslost. Sure you can write Haiku. All it takes is a little practice. Pick a subject, nature is a good one to start with.
Find words that total 5 syllables
Sun shining brightly Sun (1syllable) shining (2syllables) brightly (2sylables) total of five syllables for first line

Find words that toal 7 syllables for next line
the creek twisting through meadow the (1syllable) creek(1syllable) twisting (2syllables) through (1syllable) meadow (2syllables) total 7 syllables

Find words with five syllables for last line
Bluejay, chattering Bluejay (2 syllables) Chattering (3syllables ) toatl 5 syllables.

Sun shining brightly
creek twisting through the meadow
Bluejay, chattering

Come on try it, in time you will be cranking them out as quickly as you think of them. Dee

I never did respond to this, and I wanted to...for me, personally, lambslove, I really liked the first one best (although I thought both of them were terrific). :D

Here's a few more of mine...

Fiery sunset
Melting in the western sky
Another day spent.
~~~~~~~
Time is a blessing
We can not control it's lengths
We can not earn it.
~~~~~~~

A measure of love-
There is nothing to compare
To our Father's grace.
~~~~~~~
An eye for an eye
What goes around comes around
Until we're all blind.
~~~~~~~

Autumn leaves rustle
Alongside me as I walk
Down the dusty road.
~~~~~~~
Icy frost shimmers
Sparkling like diamond chips
From the breaking dawn.
~~~~~~~

Loving and loyal
Obedient dogs are true
Best friends of mankind.

Blessings to all, HITR

I have written many haiku, but I'll post them here in small groups every couple days so as not to hog the thread. :rolleyes:

#1:
White silky flowers;
Are they just artificial
Are they really there?

#2:
The warm sun filled day
Spreads light to all creation
From this gorgeous scene.

#3:
The tiny baby
Fascinated by her feet
Small piece of heaven.

#4:
The bird sings a song
Of the good things yet to come
Then he flies away.

#5:
The rainbow so bright
Reflected in the oak trees
During sunny rain.

#6:
The snow falls outside
The bitter cold ground turns white
The birds are all gone.

#7:
The bright manger scene
Spreads light to all creation
Long since Bethlehem.

#8:
Poetry is made
By people who express each
Feeling in their heart

#9:
Time marches on fast
The bright sun rises and sets
The earth spins around.

#10:
Sounds come from no where
Flashes of light pound the brain
Echoes scream out loud.

Those are the first set.
Can anybody give me an opinion on them, even if they're awful?

Hi, ph. :) I really liked them. Just by reading them I got a sense of flow that is very similar to my own writings...found that pretty interesting. It also seems like you write in the same manner that I do with regard to imagery (as well as flow), but I guess I'd have to read some of your other stuff to find just what similarities are there. What age group (for children) do you work with the most?

HITR,
I reread some of your haiku and I think you're right; we do write with similar styles.
As far as children go, my own Sunday School class is 3-5 year olds, and our midweek program is for age 4-12 (or 6th grade). I'm also Sunday School Superintendent, so I have charge of the whole Sunday School, from adult class to nursery class. A big job, but the rewards are out of this world!!

Some more haiku:
#11:
Airborne music floats
Beside voices of children
In the bright sunshine.

#12:
The colors of the
Rainbow sparkle in the mist
And float on the clouds.

#13:
With sun in your eyes
You cannot see th future
Or the days ahead.

#14:
Green blue gold and white
The bright colors of nature
Created by God.

#15:
The great love of God
Descends upon all mankind
Straight from Calvary.

#16:
Long streaming river
Flows fast through hills and valleys
Winding and bending

#17:
Snow and icicles
A chill falls over he world
Winter has arrived.

#18:
A network of wires
Stretched across nature's landscape
Intruding on God.

#19:
Fire crackles and roars
Destroying all it touches
Yet brings warmth and light.

#20:
Clouds sail above us
Sometimes fast, sometimes slowly
But always moving.

With saddest, pained hearts
We read of crimes by churchmen
Once trusted with kids.

We read about men who
wanted some pleasure, delight
in unhealthy thrills.

Oh bad men who hurt
these innocent ones, how can you
hide behind the Cross?

Killing their spirits,
exhausting their souls, harming their
bodies, for your bliss.

Oh bad men who harmed,
why didn't you take your bliss
in being men of God?

Why didn't you take
it all to the Cross, and give
your sick sin to God?

Repent you bad men,
and show us your grief, let tears
wash you and us clean.

Many of you are so good at haiku. Am enjoying reading all your posts. :) I'm not good at haiku, but it comes from my heart.

One day long ago
On a cross He died for me
Cleansed of sin for good

Thank you, Lord Jesus
Hallelujah! Praise to Him!
All glory to God!!!

Thanks, lambslove, for your encouragement! You're a very good writer and express yourself well. You're a fine example to the rest of us, especially to those of us who are not writers but give it the old college try. :)
