Are there any parts of the scripture that specifically refer to the idea of trials and tribulations? I wouldn't normally think about it, but my dad told me a few months ago that as a young husband he asked God for trials and tribulations. Subsequently our family went through a great amount of faith trials. My parents divorced, my brother died, my two living brothers were injured seriously and almost died, I was injured seriously when I was 5 and then again at 12. We were wealthy, then the farming business went to heck during the late 80's, early 90's and we went bankrupt.

I know every person likes to think they have it worse than everyone else, but I can safely say that we actually have had it worse than anyone I know. This personally doesn't bother me, as I don't love anyone or anything more than God. As John said:

"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever."

Still, I wonder if God would actually bring trials upon those that ask for it. The idea seems pretty fascinating.

Hi Zorobabel

If you would like to hear of trials and tribulations read the Book of Job. It is wonderful and you and your family can relate to it very well.

But we are told in the book of Psalms that if we delight ourselves in the Lord he will give us the desires of our hearts (Ps. 37:4). We are also told in such books as Peter and James and even Job that trials and tribulations "perfect" us or mold us into the image of Christ by making us rely upon and seek God, thus letting the worldy things or dross be taken off from us. So in essence if a man asks for trials and tribulations from God, he is asking God to fashion him into the image of Christ. So I would say that sometimes God does put people through trials who ask for Him to do so for He knows the outcome of such trials.

Be well

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

This is what they were talking about......

But I dont know if you should ask for trials....Life is hard enough and no matter who you are, especially as a christian you will encounter many different trials and tribulations without asking for them...Instead I think you should pray for God to do his perfect will in you and strive to live in his perfect will for your life no matter what that might be. Thats when you will truly be happy!

What makes you think that all those things came from God in response to your dad's prayer? All farms went bad in the eighties, and no farm was spared this hardship time. God would never send your dad divorce, because He says He hates divorce.

The truth is, things happen. No family is spared trials and tribulations, whether or not they pray and whether or not they know God. It's part of human life to experience disappointments and sadness (see the thread "Disappointment with God" in the club section). Even the ones that seem above it all go through suffering that they just don't discuss it with anyone, so it seems like they are more blessed, but they aren't.

God doesn't necessarily bring disaster upon you, but he won't necessarily spare you from it either. Like he says, he brings the rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

It's great that this all only served to make you stronger in the Lord. Like Romans 8:28 says, God makes all things work according to his will, for the good of those who are The Called.

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
