what was mocked was creation scientists... not God.
It could be difficult for some people to know if a "creation scientist" represented God or not. In the case of the story of the 42 children, it would seem that they did not believe that the prophet represented God. It turned out that he did represent God and that they had made a deadly mistake.
There is another story about Moses' sister Miriam, that serves as a warning in regards to speaking against a servant of God. I do not want to copy the whole story here, but this is a part of it:
Numbers 12:1-2 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for he had married an Ethiopian woman. [2] So they said, "Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us also?" And the Lord heard it.
Numbers 12:9-10 So the anger of the Lord was aroused against them, and He departed. [10] And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and there she was, a leper.
Like I said, this is only a part of the story. People can look it up in their Bible to read all of it.
There was no question to the Hebrews that there was a God. He was with them in the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. At the foot of the mountain he presented Himself to them in a way that scared them so much that they wanted Moses to interceed for them because they were so afraid of God.
Why He does not present Himself to people today in that way, I am not sure. But He has been manifest in His Son Jesus, and it is though Jesus that we know Him. As a Christian it is our job to tell the world about God. He could do a much better job Himself, if He did not go through us, to be sure. But it brings Him much more honor and glory that He is able to work in us and though us in the way He does.
God does deal direct with all people. He will speak to their heart, usually starting when they are a child. But they harden their heart against him. They deny that God has ever spoken to them. I believe at some point in their life all people know the truth, but they choose to harden their heart against the truth. The choose to reject the truth and believe a lie.
