hey tulc, I live in Chicagoland and I was wondering if true Chicagoans say "shi-KAW-go" or "shi-CAH-go". what say you? it seems people split it both ways.

Shih-CAH-guh (I lived there for a few years too).

A lot of it depends on where you grew up in Chicago, if you listen to hiz onna da mayar that's Bridgeport but someone from the west side sounds different then someone from the sout' side! :)
tulc(who lives with people from all over the world, and that gives us some pretty odd accents in our school!) :D

I'm fairly "unaccented", although I've been told that I'll let my Minnesota (uff da!) accent show from time to time. I'm more likely to sound as though I have a southern (US) accent though, which I'm not sure where it came from, because I've lived in Minnesota my entire life. Sometimes I deliberately sound Minnesotan and Canadian for a laugh though. :)
You haven't been listening to that evil Country & Western music, have you??

I just like a German speaking English. Not as bad as your usual run-of-the-mill Hollywood German villain but my accet is noticable.

Although, when people notice I'm not a native speaker, I tend to ask them where I may be from. The answers run from Scandinavia to Ireland! :)

You're not a native English speaker?

Your English is so good that you use the same colloquial expressions -- and even slang -- that I would expect native speakers living in the U.S. to use.

Your command of English is actually better than a good many native English speakers!

This might not make much sense to non-Brits, but my accent is a mix of RP, from spending most of my life in the Midlands (but NOT Birmingham! I'm NOT a Brummie!) and generic northern, due to having a Scouse mother, and currently living in Sheffield. I just wish it was Welsh :(:(:(
Also, when I've been speaking German or Dutch for too long, my accent just goes a bit wrong. I'm sure it's not meant to happen. But it does :(

Mississippi???

I learned how to do a pretty convincing Mississippi accent when I played Blanche Dubois in a performance of A Streetcar Named Desire. The woman playing Stanley was this tiny waif of a woman who could not have weighed 95 pounds dripping wet with her clothes on; and I had my beard and white hair and was decked out in my Southern finery on my very portly frame against this woman playing Stanley Kowalski -- and I was told later that I was Blanche Dubois and she was the scariest, most intense Stanley Kowalski they'd ever se
en!

That was my favorite drag role. Sometime, I'd like to do Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - playing Maggie the Cat, of course.

(I have wondered if I could pull off Margot Channing in All About Eve...)

I kind of have a monotone/baritone thing going on (and am from just out of New Yawk). When I was living in Texas, people always said I sounded like sly stallone or the brother from "Everybody loves Raymond" - which is funny considering I can only reach 5' 6'' with thick soled shoes.

Ben Browder (born in North Carolina) and Stephen Colbert (born in South Carolina) speaks with an accents similar to mine for the most part.

I tend to alternate between neutral American and Southern Drawl, with some African-American Southern (as far as we can figure, a lady that babysat me a lot when I was little spoke Gullah*, and only about 10% of the kids in my class were white when I was in elementary school) and occasionally a dash of Californian surfer (if you ignore the odd high pitch in my voice from me being excited enough about something to be speaking in such an accent).

I can also speak and comprehend most gibberish, my brother and I are capable of communicating in a half-minute of grunts and mumbles what would take our mom five to ten minutes, and I understand most of what Ozzy Osbourne says.

*Funny story about me and Gullah, I was watching the discovery channel or some similar channel once, and this black woman was talking and they gave her subtitles. I thought "this is stupid, she speaks English just fine, there's no need to give her subtitles." Turns out she was speaking Gullah, which I've found that folks that aren't from around where I live have a hard time understanding.
