Not all Christians believe the Bible is the "word of God". Not even the Bible makes this claim, so I am unclear why you do.
Does this mean that you believe the prophets who claimed to give the message of God were not doing so?

I don't believe that any of them were literally, word for word, passing on direct dictation from God, no.

But then again, I'm unaware of any prophet claiming anything of the sort either. Mosses would be closest, and, if you are interested, no, I don't believe thqat the words attributed to Mosses are precisely what God said

God spoke through the prophets.

[bible]Isaiah 7:7[/bible]
[bible]Exodus 7:17[/bible]
[bible]Joshua 24:2[/bible]
[bible]1 Samuel 2:27[/bible]
[bible]Jeremiah 2:5[/bible]
[bible]Ezekiel 11:5[/bible]
these are just a small example of the hundreds of times God spoke through them.

I have no problem with the idea of God speaking through the prophets.

I just don't think "spoke through" is the same as "dictated precisely to", and that there is no room in there for human bias, error or personality to creep in

If God is truly God. If He has the power to communicate through prophets, what makes you think that He doesn't have the ability to ensure the message comes across as He intends? Have you read the book of Jonah? It's a good example.

Whether God spoke through prophets or not is off-topic for this thread. If my child said to me, "Mom, I am gay," I would certainly not consult any prophets, as they don't know my child, and they don't know my family. I would say, "Darling, I love you, and I will do everything I can to support you and care for you whatever sexual orientation you are or how God made you."

There is a great song writtten by Fred Small whose chorus goes like this:

"You can be anybody that you want to be
You can love whomever you will
You can travel any country where your heart leads
And know I will love you still

"You can live life alone
You can gather friends around
You can choose one special one
And the only measure of your words and your deeds
Will be the love you leave behind when you're done."

I realize that was way OT ( like all of these threads lol) and I apologize.

If my child told me that he/she was gay, I honestly don't know how I'd react. I know what I would not do though. I would not be hateful or love them any less.

Somehow I knew that, Jet. I have no doubt you'd be a great father who would always love your child.

if God is truly God, then he has the power to appear before each and every one of us in our own personal burning bush epiphany and hand us a tailor made set of rules just for us to live our lives by... but he doesn't.

So just because he has the ability to create A (note:not the) Bible that is inerrant and imuteable... doesn't mean that thats what he did. And, the uncontestable examples of mistranslation, self contradiction, historical and scientific errors in the Bible strongly support that thats not what he did.

Well He didn’t appear to all the people but to the prophet Moses. But he did make Himself flesh and dwell amongst us. ‘Believe’ occurs about 230 times in the NT, yet you seem to doubt its reliable.

As Jesus said Luke 24:25 "He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!"
So I suggest God didnt need to appear in our own personal burning bush.

Here's a question for parents and for prospective parents. What would you do if your son or daughter sat down with you one day and said, "I am gay?"

I leave the options for responding up to folks here.

I'd say "I love you and I always will. You be gay. But you being gay doesn't give you the license from God to have sex with someone of the same sex any more than me being a heterosexual gives me the license from God to have sex with someone of the opposite sex. In accordance with God's Word, any sex between two people of the same sex is fornication.. He has decreed that sex be between a husband and wife and anything else is fornication.

You, just like a heterosexual, must be willing to lay down your life and everything in it to follow Christ and live obediently to Him.

And now we're going to press on in Christ and give this to Him just as we do everything else."

I would never say something like this to my child. I would say that my child's faith is up to him or her; it's not for me to tell my child what to believe, or that my child must be Christian.

But how you raise your child is certainly up to you.

You asked what we would say to our children. My children are my responsiblity. As such raising them in the way of Christ is also my responsibilty.

Your child's faith can be left to chance by you, and the two of you can spend eternity together separated from Christ.

As for me and my house, we shall praise and serve the Lord.

it's not for me to tell my child what to believe, or that my child must be Christian.

Just a shame. But then again, with you not telling your child what to believe, perhaps God will open the door for the Saints to get the truth in and the child confesses and repents and comes to faith in Jesus Christ.

I said that how you raise your child is up to you. It's not how I am raising my child. I am raising my child to think for herself. I would never expect her to adopt a particular religion just because it is my religion. When she gets old enough to choose, I will encourage her to choose her faith for herself.

Similarly, I would never judge my child for her sexual orientation, any more than I would judge her for her ethnic background, which is different from mine. I will always encourage her to be herself.

I thought about this at some length.

On balance I would marginally rather my son was straight. The reason is that he will have to live in a world with explicit bigotry and hatred. I would rather he was spared that being directed at himself.

If he told me that, I'd say 'so?'. Actually it wouldn't ever come up like that because he knows throughout his growing up that his sexuality isn't something that needs hiding or being pretended about - either way.
