At least this my favorite part of the creation account reconciled with an old earth:

How long do you think a day was when the sun wasn't created yet?

One rotation.

It actually shows how irreconcilable Genesis is with our modern conceptions of the world. The sun was created to inhabit the light, to rule the day. The sun exists for the day, and not the day because of the sun.

To answer your question:

That is how long the days were without the sun, the moon and the stars:
"And there was evening and there was morning, the first/second/third day."

That is how long the days were with the sun, the moon and the stars:
"And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth/fifth/sixth day"

And I see absolutely no reason to read "day" as anything else than "day" at all.

One rotation.
With respect to what?

Since there's no Sun, how would you measure it and what would be the purpose of defining time against this unmeasurable, not-effecting-jolly-well-anything unit?

I thought of 'one rotation' as well then realized how meaningless it was as an answer.

One rotation of what around what? And how long did it take?

One rotation of the earth upon its axis. I'm talking rotation [on its axis], not revolution [around the sun].

The bit in Supper's Ready where it goes:

Dad to dam to dum to mum, mum diddly washing mum diddly washing

Mum to Mud to mad to dad, dad diddly office dad diddly office.

This is why we got kids on here doing the same thing to perfectly good questions and answers. They want to grow up to be just like us ... um ... adults. This is also why even the very intelligent can't understand Genesis 1.

It was what I hoped the thread would be about, imagine my disappointment when I found out it was yet another thread discussing one of the earliest known works of human fiction and not about the 70s prog rockers after all.

What's a "prog rocker"?

He probably means one rotation of the earth about his axis, which he is assuming to be 24 hours.
An hour is defined as 1/24 of one full rotation. Rotation is motion, and motion must be measured against a reference frame. What constitutes the reference frame if not the sun?

It could be 60 x 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium-133 atom.

(Don't ask me to explain that. That's a copy & paste. I have no idea what it means.)

Well, assuming creation happened as in Genesis (never mind the contradicting stories) a day could have been set by god to be 24 hours long, and afterwards the orbits and revolutions of the planets were set up precisely to reflect the length of time god arbitrarily picked.
