:help:

OK.............so our priest is coming this afternoon to do our home blessing (we have an apartment). Someone just told me it is customary to give them food or money before they leave. Is this correct? We go to a Greek parish. If you give money........how much? Our priest is diabetic. OK.........freaking out here now! We never did either of these the past 2 years, so now I am wondering and babbling now.

It's okay to give some amount of money to the Priest - he will probably just turn around and give it to the parish. I wouldn't worry about the amount - whatever you feel comfortable with.

It's also okay just to offer coffee/tea and some little snack.

Don't stress! :)

Some years ago - before I became EC I went to visit a friend [ now my GodPapa :) ] in January and he arranged to have his House Blessing then - so it would be something I would experience probably for the first and last time [ my husband being an agnostic who insists he does not see anything in the Church :( ]

The House Blessing was to be done by the Bishop - not the Pastor - well he spoke English as a Mother tongue. I never saw anything being handed over to him - BUT we had a good lunch cooked by me :) and a lot of talk too afterwards.

BMW - it's probably too late now - but just remember what it took me a long time to realise - Priests are human beings too :) Relax and enjoy

Oh yea, and turn off your cell phone or at least put it on silent... Apparently that's now one of the things on the list the Finnish Orthodox church gives to their flock... (might just be a particular parish but it's a good one)...

LOL................everything is ok now! Since it was the first home blessing that was being done without hubby present, I was nervous (the past 2 ones went real well). I gave him a little thank you card with some cash inside. He didn't want to take the card, probably suspecting money, but I insisted saying "it's just a little thank you card". ^_^ He never wants to accept (like for doing our wedding sacrament, etc.), but he is our priest and a very busy person........also think about the cost of gas, etc. Anyway..............the entire time went real well and we talked afterwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

The Priest doesn't always expect a feast, he usually has to move on to another house during this Feast Day. Some people give the Priest donations for his Church when they come over to bless the house. The Greek Priests and Antiochians are used to this compared to the Serbians and Russians.

But I'm glad everything went well. :)

Yeah they do not expect a meal... something just for the visit like a tea or coffee is good. And money is not necessary. Do not worry about gas money the parish pays for that too... but it all depends on their salary...

Some especially GOA priests get a real good one ...others do not... especially the young priests with families...

It is always a blessing to have the priest over. :D
You always learn more one to one.
God bless,
Philothei
