Someone told me that changed a few years ago, because of cable television.It's my understanding that one person watching a television program does not produce ratings. If that person participates in the Nielsen ratings system than his television usage is tracked.
If you do not have a special box/participate in surveys monitored by this Nielsen program what you watch on television is not affecting ratings at all, it does not affect sponsors or any of that. You personally are not contributing.

They said that Neilson now uses stats from cable providers.
I don't know if the person was right or not.
