Okay everyone this boggles my mind.

I've been going on about 3 hours of sleep for the past couple of months and I don't understand why it's not affecting me. Back home I get like 9 easy but here I'm not tired.

I told someone this by accident and now I'm being watched by the department.

I swear I'm not doing any drugs or anything but I think the department thinks I am because I'm just so full of life and such. My grades are good and I'm just having a lot of fun here. Probably shouldn't have told my advisor I'm having fun.

Any ideas?

Yeah but it was a all of a sudden change. I'm sleeping a little bit longer and most of that's due to me taking stuff that has sleeping stuff in it (getting a cold).

I just don't like my advisor and other professors watching me. You should have seen my advisor the next day in class. I mean he watched me like a freaking hawk.

I don't want to be watched anymore but I'm not going to change my behavior because I am who I am.

I just don't get why the sleeping patterns changed and I'm not dragging booty.

Well I remember my psychology book talking about rare cases where people only need a few minutes to a couple hours of sleep to be fully rested. Its rare, but it does happen. As long as you're feeling good, just enjoy it. If you're not taking drugs, they won't be able to do anything but watch you. Now you know how superheroes feel! lol jk

But if you develop any super powers don't tell anybody.

No I swear I'm not taking any drugs.

My advisor doesn't believe that everything is okay. Even told me that and again I had to reasure my advisor things are fine. Even got personal and started asking me questions when we were in a meeting. I had to let him ask to show that I'm not hiding anything but I don't think it did any good. I told him it's werid and agreed but it was one of those I agree but did it in a way to let me know that he thinks I'm lying.

Ahh....I'm not talking to people no more. That's it, I'm done. Shutting the door, locking it, putting up a wall and going to annova land.

I really don't see how its any of their business if they don't have any real evidence of drugs. Not sure where you go to school, but advisors at my school don't even ask questions. If it was affecting your work or something I could understand, but if there hasn't been any consequence I don't see how it really matters.

I know a ton of students who average 3-4 hours everynight. They aren't very energetic during the day, but they don't have advisors looking over their shoulders because of it.

I agree. Not anyone's business but the department is allowed to take action if something is out of sort with a student. Even can take it as far as to tell the student either they enter counseling or their out of the program. How dumb is that? I do agree with some of it because you have to have all your crap worked out and if you don't and someone sees you don't, good luck with getting a degree.

I actually get a full analysis later in the program by someone so that should be interesting. ^_^

Yeah but that's normal behavior. I stick out. While everyone else is not sleeping or is over sleeping, I'm the only one who's not and rearing to go. Even one of my other teachers made mention of it.

I'm like that too, I probably average 5 hours of sleep a day and I'm fine, I've been doing it for years. I love staying up late and I get up early for classes. I guess I'm one of those lucky people too. I've always been this way, my friends think I'm crazy and they don't know how I do it.

Hypomania is abnormality of mood characterized by optimism, pressure of speech and activity, and decreased need for sleep. Some people have increased creativity.
Hypomania may feel good to the person who experiences it and may even be associated with good functioning and enhanced productivity.
Hypomania can be difficult to diagnose because it may masquerade as mere happiness. It is important to diagnose hypomania because, as an expression of bipolar disorder, it can cycle into depression and carry an increased risk of suicide. However, hypomania can rarely be maintained indefinitely, and is often followed by an escalation to mania or a crash to depression.
The episode is not severe enough to cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning, or to necessitate hospitalization, and there are no psychotic features. The episode is associated with an unequivocal change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of the person when not symptomatic.
What is Bipolar II?

Bipolar II is a psychological disorder that involves mood swings from depressed to hypomanic states. Unlike bipolar I, also called manic depression, bipolar II does not involve manic states. Hypomania is defined as a milder form of mania, in which the patient has a period of heightened happiness or elation. People in a hypomanic state may experience increased anxiety, sleeplessness, good mood, or irritability.

Hypomanic patients may find themselves extremely productive and happy during hypomanic periods. Other symptoms include sleeplessness, racing thoughts, distractibility and excess energy This can further complicate diagnosis.

What are the symptoms of Hypomania?
  • Decreased need for sleep.
  • Effected people tend to overestimate their capabilities.
  • Making lots of plans.
  • Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities.
  • They wish of doing several things at once.
  • More sensitive than usual. [[[ “Ahh....I'm not talking to people no more. That's it, I'm done. Shutting the door, locking it, putting up a wall and going to annova land”]]]
  • They feel like taking too many responsibilities.
  • Increase in goal-directed activity
http://www.depression-guide.com/hypomania.htm

Prognosis of mania

The average duration of a manic episode is 2 months, with 95% making a full recovery in time. Recurrence is the rule in bipolar disorders, with up to 90% relapsing within 10 years.
Famous people with hypomania

Hypomania is commonly found in the people from the world of music.
  • Recently, Radiohead front man Thom Yorke admitted "Hypomania.
  • Richey Edwards, the 'fatalistic Manic Street Preacher' suffered from the same condition as Yorke.
  • Syd Barrett of the band Pink Floyd has also reportedly suffered from hypomania.

if you don't sleep for long periods of time, you'll lose your desire to sleep. And even though you don't feel it effecting you..... it does. I'm speaking as a recovered insomniac so I have inside information.

well i used to take some medication for depression and it effected my sleep so much. So when I finnally got off of it I had insomnia for a good 2-3 years. I was up for hours on end and I was usaully up all night and slept all day. When i first got off the medication I was up for 3 days straight [thats 72 hours without sleep]. I'm just now starting to recover.... but it took 3 years to finnally make my mind relize that I wasn't taking a depression pill anymore. i CHEWED my doctor out something terrable in the middle of all this and i demanded a new doctor. AKA I kind of fired my doctor. But I don't care! You don't give a cleint a pill if it has that much effect on a person's sleep.

Oh they give out pills that have much worse long term side effects than loss of sleep (not saying loss of sleep isn't bad).

**Edit** Looks like you've already been answered... but I'll toss my post in the ring anyway.

Sometimes it is a symptom of manic depression. Mania incorporates extreme highs - you don't sleep much, but you feel great. You get lots of stuff done, you're high power, you feel like you're a winner. But then the low hits, and it's devastating.

Does that sound familiar? How "down" do you get? The mania goes in cycles, and the cycles could be long (one low every year) or they could be short (one low every few days).

Or, insomnia could be on the table too. I have a bit of insomnia, but it has the complete opposite effect on me... I'm tired alllllll the time...

I don't really think I have a disorder guys. I was fine until I moved and I think it's just because I'm so excited to be in school and found my nitch. I've found something that I love and I just got this huge serge of motivation and energy.

I went to class today and had a blast. I love going to the library and reading material, etc...I'm just so freaking excited.

I was in a bad situation for a year and didn't think that there was life outside of it. Then when I seen that there was, I just felt like things have been lifted off my shoulders and life is so much better.
