In the story Jesus tells us how the 5 wise virgins were deemed "wise" by Him for one reason only, and that was because they prepared themselves for Him "in advance" by making sure that they had a supply of oil for their lamps.

At the same time Jesus tells us that the foolish were foolish for no other reason than because they didn't bother to carry any oil for their lamps. (And this "foolishness" of theirs is going to cost them Big Time!)

This story is "extremely important to understand" because of the outcomes of the 5 wise and the 5 foolish virgins, and where each one of us may fit into the picture.

Therefore, in the context of this parable, it becomes "absolutely important" to identify the "OIL" as well as "WHY" they needed to Trim their lamps, as well as the meaning of "The Midnight Hour", and this we shall do by following the reasons and the logic set down by Jesus...

Note that while the bridegroom tarried they all slept.
(This "sleep" is not to be confused with the world's "sleep" while in la la land, as we too did at one time. We know that we are of the Day and not the Night (see 1 Thes.5:4-8).
So, in other words, the virgins were "biding their time" resting until the call came that the bridegroom was coming and for them to arise and go meet Him.
This is what the Church is doing today: Resting or Sleeping with one eye opened waiting for the Bridegroom to come back for them as He promised them He would.

In the meantime, at the midnight hour (i.e. at the latest and darkest hour) a call goes out: "He is coming, go out and meet Him"!
Then all the virgins woke up and grabbed their lamps to trim them.

Ask yourself, WHY would they be bothering to "Trim their lamps" if the Bridegroom is standing just outside the door? Answer, "Because He is not!" They have to go out and meet Him in the Darkness! No one bothers to Trim a lamp EXCEPT AND UNLESS THEY NEED IT!
Well it was definitely needed because they all arose and, Jesus says, "trimmed their lamps"!

What happened next is what happens when someone finds out that they have been deceived into thinking they didn't need that oil, and so they discarded it along the way, seeing no need for it... "Oh, oh, we have no oil"!
The the foolish upon waking up suddenly realize that they are destitute of something deemed absolutely vital by Jesus: "OIL"! They were carrying no oil for their lamps!

Can you imagine their dilemna? What shall we do? We must have oil! So they turned to the wise and said, "Give us some of your oil, for our lamps have gone out" (i.e. "grown cold". see Matt.24:12).
But the wise said: "No, or else there won't be enough oil for the both of us." (That leaves The Holy Spirit as being the Oil in this parable, out). The wise may have well said to them: "Hey! We told you to carry oil at all times but you wouldn't listen. Sorry we can't help you".

It was when they went out to try and buy some oil (see Prov.23:23) that the Lord came and and took those who were READY - THOSE WHO WERE READY - (Ready by standing on the word of God!) (see Matt.24:40).

The sorriest words that anyone will ever hear are found right here in Jesus' reply to the foolish virgins: "Verily, verily I say unto you, I know you not!" THAT is how important having the Oil is! It's what keeps us attached to the Vine! ( see John 14:23-24, ESPECIALLY Luke 6:46-49)

*** So, WHY did the virgins have to trim their wicks?...

Obviously because by this story Jesus is telling all of us that there is a "time" between the midnight hour when the call went out and His coming - a "time" of darkness (Matt.24:21), yet a time that must and will come to pass (Luke 21:28), a time when only those who are ready (Rev.3:3) will go in with Him.

There is no other reason for wicks to be trimmed and oil to be preciously gaurded UNLESS there's a definite reason for it! And the reason was because they had to go out, travel in the night to the sound of His voice, and meet the bridegroom!
The trimming of their wicks therefore, stands for the "Endurance" they are going to need over the long haul that's going to be necessary in order to Stand upon God's word to the end!

The 5 "Foolish virgins" were willing to trim their wicks (i.e. endure) as well, BUT they had no oil for their lamps. They found this out too late! Too little too late!

*** So what is the OIL?...

The Oil here represents the vessel and lamp filled with "The Truth": Keeping and doing God's word! It's what keeps us from drying up and whithering away!
If the Foolish would have remained in Jesus' words (see Matt.24:25) and not allowed themselves to become deceived and thus gaurded their oil (i.e. their Love of the Truth) for the lamps, which in turn gives Light to their lamp and path (see Ps.119:105), they would have had the endurance and the kind of faith necessary to make it through that time of darkness.

Remember, "The wise virgins prepared themselves for Him well in advance. In advance because they were prepared for His coming by heeding the word of God. They knew what was necessary and held on to it."

When the time came they had the only commodity necessary to endure to the end with: "Oil for their lamps" - The Oil that brought to them their "Unwavering Faith based solidly upon the Truth of God's word: A faith they heard and received and kept unwavering, from the very beginning! A faith they wouldn't treat lightly - A faith they would gaurd with their lives - A faith they would endure in to the end!

Nice work Biff,
And welcome to the forum.
But I have a question for you. The Lord showed me this truth a couple of weeks back. So I am curious on your take here. What ever became of the five wise virgins, and then the five foolish ones?? You never said.

Matthew 25:2-3
Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. [3] Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,

Foolish here means they were given over to the flesh. They did not feel a need for Holy Sanctified living. They relyed on the oil and the light of the five wise virgins.

Matthew 25:8-9
And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' [9] But the wise answered, saying, 'No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.'

They were told to go "buy" oil. There is a price to be paid for the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus in the pearl of great price said it will cost you everything. You have to give up everything you can not keep, in order to gain what can not be lost.

It takes Holy, Consecrated, Sanctifed, Dedicated living, to walk with God. You can not be in bed with the world and walk with God also. The five foolish virgins represent the harlot church that is in bed with the world. The only light they have is the light of those who are walking with God. But when Jesus returns, that will not be enough.

Matthew 25:11-12
Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!' [12] But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.'

We have to know Jesus for ourselves. When Jesus returns for His bride, it will not be enough to know about Him, from being with others who know Him. We must have our own personal relationship with God. Thanks, JohnR7

Dear rollin thunder,

The story is not one to base any firm eschatolgy on in the strict sense of the word.
You have Jesus in Matthew 24 clearly laying out all that.

It simply deals with what happens to professing Christians in the end times, when it's time for Him to come.

Those who are ready when the call goes out to go and meet Him, will trim their lamps and go forth into the night to meet him.
Those who have "another" eschatology (other than that which Jesus and His disciples taught) will find that they have been duped by it when it comes time to wake up and face the truth.

I do believe in one coming and one appearing as the Scripture teaches.

Hi Biff,
I think I would have to disagree here. It is not just a story. Jesus was much more than a story teller. It is a Parable. Jesus used the parables to teach. He was a teacher, the great teacher. True, parables were like stories, but they were much more. He painted pictures of truth with His words of wisdom. These parables were meant to teach us how we should live, and how to get to heaven. You can definately read between the lines, and these parables have deep meaning. I will share more at a later time on this. I already mentioned it on a different thread, but I don't remember which one. But, I believe there is a great truth in this parable, and it should not be overlooked.

Dear rollin thunder,

I stated "some" of what Jesus taught in that parable.
I could have went into detail and gone into specifics using tons of Scripture and a several page report on what He means.

Except for the call and His opening the door, in that parable, NO Eschatology (like for instance, wars and rumors of wars, the A of D being set up, the length of the Great Trib., the apostacy, the revelation of AC, sun growing dark, heavens shaking, the timing of His appearance, etc.) was taught.

It was "PREPERATION" for His coming!
It was all a part of His: "See, I have told you of these things in advance", message, earlier in Matt.24.

He taught about the wedding feast and the related, "Watch or you will not know when I will come", in other places.

When He comes we're not going to be able to "excuse ourselves" from our responsibilities and our being allowed to be deceived by others, because we didn't heed His words!

The "Oil" are those who heeded those words of His and are based upon The Rock of revealed Truth!!!

The "Lack of Oil" in that parable shows those who didn't take Him seriously at His word, and have built their castle on shifting sand.

Matthew 13:10-13
And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" [11] He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. [12] For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. [13] Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

Jesus said it has been given to us to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven. Heaven is now on the inside of us, and we have the Holy Spirit of God to understand the parable and all the things of God. So for those of us who are saved, we grow in understanding, line upon line, precept upon precept we increase.
But for those who perish, even what they know, is takes away from them.

Good post Biff, but I believe you are missing some important distinctions which should be reconsidered. This is a wedding parable, so you rightly identify it as endtimes prophecy. But you are misidentifying the participants.

Who is the bridegroom? Jesus

Who is the bride? The church

Who are the Virgins? not the bride. The church is one body, not five, nor ten. The bridgegroom comes for the bride, but the virgins are bridesmaids, helpers of the bride.

I believe the Virgins are Israel, the call 'The bridegroom cometh' is equivalent to 'Jesus is coming back' 'Go out to meet him' is the Jews accepting Jesus as messiah. The five foolish virgins are those jews who do not accept Jesus as messiah and are locked out of the wedding. Too late they realize the messiah has come.

This is really a complex subject and I'm reluctant to further define the roles in fear of misleading someone because of my own lack of complete understanding all aspects of the Jewish Wedding ceremony.

However, the theme of a wedding ceremony is so emphasized in the scripture that it is hard to discount it as a simple analogy. Jesus identified the disciples as 'friends of the bridegroom', in Matthew and Luke the wedding feast is described and I believe that the 'wedding guests' are Israel. In the OT God is married to Israel, and under the law Jesus would be forbidden to marry Israel, both because of her divorce for adultry and Israel's relationship as Mother of Jesus. It seems reasonable that all these pieces fit together and there was a reason for Jesus to refer to the desciples as 'friends of the bridgroom'. God is consistently the 'Father', Jesus is consistently the 'bridgegroom, it would seem strange that in one place believers are the bride, in another place, friends of the bridgroom, and in yet a third place, wedding guests. If God were simply trying to describe our relationship with Him and Jesus it would have been much simpler to stick with the Father/children relationship rather than introduce the much more complex husband/wife relationship. The only reason I can think of to do this is because He is trying to tell us much more and expects us to recognize that all these things must fit together and be true.

I believe that the oil is none other than love [the essence by which we know Yeshua and our God]
If we consider the incident of the pots which seemingly kept being full no matter how much oil was poured out of them, there is only one thing with this property, love
The more we give it away, the more we have.
We are warned that love too is the thing the world will run out of through the times ahead leading up to Christ's return .
I identify the wise virgins with the elect [chosen] of the tribes of Israel [except Dan and Ephraim interestingly] who will become the immortal priethood of the new covenant [order of Melchisedec]
Read Revelation 7:4-10
ending with the saving of the many through the redeeming of the few chosen to act as the servants and priests for the saving of the many:-

Rev 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
Rev 7:10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
