I didn't become a Christain until I was 22 years old. So as child I would dress up and as a teen I would try to scare Trick-or-Treaters. My husband, on the other hand, grew up believeing that even if you went to the Fall Festival at church, you were still celebrating Halloween and it was evil. So we do not do  ANYTHING on Halloween, it's just another day.

I still utilize the day, but not in the hyped up, teeth rotting way that seems to be the way of things lately. I use the time to remember the lives of those I love who have gone on from this earth and to give thanks for the time that I was given with them.

My dad is a minister, but we always got to go trick or treating and there was always a fall festival at church. I was taught from an early age the ways Halloween is abuse and turned satanic. I was also taught that as long as we kept our hearts in the right place and didn't get wrapped up in the darkness of it, there wasn't anything wrong with dressing up and having some fun.

Anything in this world can be turned into serving the wrong purpose.

This Halloween, however, I will be working. Maybe I'll give out candy to anyone who gets arrested.....:D

When I was little nobody ever told me Halloween was a "dark" holiday thingy. I went out every year until I was like 14. To me it was just an excuse to dress up and get lots of free candy. Yep, that's what it was all about.

I grew up trick-or-treating, but I wont be celebrating it anymore. My husband and I both agreed that we didnt want to be a part of it. We dont judge anyone who does though. We plan on going to our church festival and have are own little party at home. We will have a theme costume party, wether it be out of the bible or a book we have read. We will play games and start our own little tradition. We will remember loved ones who have passed, read the bible and have fun. There are plenty of other alternatives to do on Halloween. Even just renting movies and pigging out on food and spending time with family. Thats our ideas for when our children get older.

I think that Hallowe'en is just another day in a sense. I also feel because of the timing that its a good day to celebrate the bringing in of the harvest from times past. Reminding the children that people had to work really hard to be able to eat well and feed their families. To me giving out candy is symbolic of feeding those who are in need, although giving something healthier than candy might be a good option.

As I am divorced, my children will be dressing up in costumes I dont approve of ( they are dressing my 4 year old daughter up as an ugly witch and my 6 year old son as a scary creepy mummy)this year, seeing as the law says I have to allow my ex-husband visitation every other holiday. In a sense, though this will give them balance. They will have the opportunity as they grow up to see a negative example and a positive example. While i dont agree with my ex's way of doing things, my children are intelligent enough to see what is more fun to them. They already dont want to dress up the way their daddy wants them to, unfortunately i dont have a way to control what goes on over there and he refuses to listen to the children.

Awakened,
As long as you continue to have a positive influence on your children, they will pull away from the negative stuff. Looks to me you're doing a great job so far. I know it's hard (My first wife left me with 3 young girls to raise), but you have the right attitude, and it will get you through.
Great Job!!

Our church had their fall festival on Saturday. It really wasn't Halloween related. We had some delicious barbeque, games & crafts for the kids and the kids did get some candy. It was a lot of fun. As far as Halloween night goes, we won't be doing anything, it will be a normal night for us. The kids both have parties at school and can dress up that day.
