What does the bible say?

Isaiah 58
13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

Does snorkeling qualify for thy own pleasure and thy own ways?

Maybe so, maybe he is trying to lay upon me truth instead? And truth is not a burden, it does the opposite;

[bible]John 8:32[/bible]

So perhaps he is trying to let me be free... of course, is it really truth? He is really laying upon me an unnecessary burden? Questions, questions ;)

But to say he is trying to lay a burden on me a little harsh. If it is a burden, I don't think he did that on purpose.

Or maybe, he wasn't even meaning what appeared to be implied, perhaps he was meaning to me what is the purpose in the ordeal, because that may be the deciding factor in him deciding yay or nay..

Windwill,

Isn't it joyful to be able to hike in the mountains or walk by the beach on sabbath to behold the grandeur and beauty of God's creation.

Think of the 7th-day Sabbath a special date with you loved one. You should do everything together with that person.

Sometimes, it's a fine line to do these recreational activities on Sabbath. It's very easy to get diverted. Listen to what the Lord is telling you.

Lastly the He is not a dictator. He allows us to find our ways. If you are not sure what He's telling you right now, you can do the snorkeling thing and see how you feel afterwards, peace and relaxation or with a hint of guilt. Be sure to tune in to that voice. We need to at peace with the knowledge that is revealed to us.

God bless,

I agree with this. :)

If you can enjoy it with God, see His wonderful creations..then go for it! One of my favorite things to do on a Sabbath is be in nature.

Hi Windmill,

Consider this. First, taking a leasury walk in nature certainly isn't the same as taking a 20 mile hike. One is relaxing, the other is tiring and certainly not a restful thing to do. Yet both are out in nature.

Second, walking along a deserted beach is also relaxing with nothing but the sounds of the sea breeze and the surf. Snorkling takes a great deal more concentration and effort. Again both are activities in the great outdoors.

Which of the above activities do you think would be the most likely to allow you to give the most thought to your Creator? And which would be the most likely to give you reason to think about yourself and your personal needs?

The Sabbath is to be a time of rest, both physical and spiritual. With rest of this kind we become re-created in both mind and body. The word recreation is completly misunderstood by the world today. Perhaps we should spell it RE-CREATION. With this spelling, maybe, just maybe, it might cause us all to remember why the Creator gave us the Sabbath.

Respectfuly, your friend and brother in Christ,
Doc

Members of our church got together in a trailer park for the weekend.

On Sabbath we decided to take a leisurely voyage on the lake in some canoes. Seeing it was leisurely, I saw no problem wih it, however, if we had to go from point A to point B in such a manner that it was no longer leisure canoeing, then I would not have done it. I would say that the same thing would apply to walking/hiking, and snorkeling.

Yay! Or Nay!

I probably would not then I would feel OK to go on a bike ride or a bush walk.

Then that is just me, some feel OK about getting wet where as others like to keep dry.

When it comes to activity on the Sabbath I feel the dry type is better.

I can't give a text to support my view so in that I am in no way dogmatic about it.

Does snorkeling qualify for thy own pleasure and thy own ways?

Or, is it possible that snorkeling qualifies for His will that we be pleased and happy in His creation? In all my experiences, whether it be on Sabbath or not, I have found that the closest I have "felt" to being with God were when I was doing recreational things in nature. Once was when I was parasailing, the other when I was snorkeling. Something about being alone with nature, or feeling as if I were alone draws me closer to Him.

So, in my opinion, snorkeling qualifies for His will in my life--His will that He and I have quality time together in the world that He's created.

Christ was walking with his disciples through a grain field and his disciples on the Sabbath and they wre taking the grain and rubbing it in their handds you all know the story. I think if you are communing with God weather walking or snorklling it depends on how you feel about it as person.not what other people think. That is a personal decision on your part From aother old guy

Personally, I would go snorkelling on sabbath because it is a form of enjoying nature. One thing I will note is that it is a personal issue that you have to take up between you and God. Because it might be fine for me, but as Paul said, it might endanger your relationship with Christ and the sanctity of his Sabbath.

I think we need to realize that Jesus wasn't a strict dictator concerning the sabbath. In fact, he did work that benefitted others on the Sabbath. I have absolutely no problem with doing volanteer work on sabbath, such as helping serve in a soup kitchen, etc...

AND MAY RAW ROCK KILL YOU FOREVER AND EVER, AMEN.
