Roach, that's really a good question. We had a pastor once that would ask the question "Why are we doing what we're doing?"
It makes you think. What's the motive?
Paulewog hit it on the head. We should serve God because we love Him, not for anything we will receive later on. That should carry over in our everyday lives, too.

I agree, I just get frustrated or disappointed when all people are about Heaven and Hell and the reward you will get if you obey. Heaven should be now on earth while serving the Lord now, not something you look forward to for all of your "hard work" for the Lord. I feel like I live in Heaven now. It doesn't matter the outcome when I die, because I get to be with God now. Thanks for replying, I hope some other people look at their motives by the question posted. Jesus Bless you.

It's like some people will say, "Jesus, I'll accept you if you tell me what's in it for me."
That is not acceptance by faith. That's acceptance for personal benefit.
The Bible does tell us what we can look forward to, but that should not be the ultimate reason why we serve Him.

waterwizard,

You talk about "acceptance by faith" yet you seem to forget that
"FAITH is to be SURE on the things we HOPE for, and to be CERTAIN of the things we CANNOT see. It was by their FAITH that people of ancient times won God's approval" (Hebrews 11:1-2).

What is it that people of God HOPE for? According to apostle Paul, children of God are "HEIRS according to the HOPE of eternal life" (Titus 3:7).

Hence, your belief that people of God OBEY the COMMANDMENTS of God WITHOUT any expectation of a reward is FALSE! The HOPE of eternal life is of paramount importance to children of God.

As Jesus said, "he who ENDURES to the end shall be SAVED" (Matt. 24:13).

Thus, ONLY members of the IGLESIA NI CRISTO WILL be saved!

That's TRUE! The work of Christ on the cross is NOT sufficient in of itself for salvation
One must ENTER the FOLD or FLOCK in order to be SAVED. That fold or flock is the IGLESIA NI CRISTO, the TRUE church of Christ in these last days.

The IGLESIA NI CRISTO is the TRUE church of Christ in these last days. It has been GIVEN to them to KNOW The mysteries of the kingdom of heaven THROUGH a MESSENGER commissioned by God THROUGH Bible PROPHECIES.

A brief declaration and vindication of the Trinity

The following links provide information regarding Iglesia ni Cristo, it's founder, their doctrine, who they state Jesus is?, what Salvation is according to their man-made doctrinal beliefs, the control they adminster to it's members, their deceptive practices, and the claims of the founder, Felix Manalo and his belief that he is spoken of in scripture as a messenger of God/The 5th angel.

There is a considerable amount of data that has been gathered on Iglesia ni Cristo, much of it from their own publications and former members.

I believe it is well worth the time reading over the information regarding Iglesia ni Cristo, indeed.

Getting back to the original question:

If Heaven was not the reward for being a follower of God and Jesus, would you still walk in the ways of the Lord? How would your life change from now if the bible never mentioned the reward Heaven and the punishment Hell? And are you only a Christian for the Reward?
The thing to note is that Heaven is not the reward. The promises of God to those who obey Him are very clear and definite. If we ask with Peter, “What shall we have therefore?” the Lord’s answer to us as to him is, “Everlasting life.” Matt. 19:27-29

He did not say happiness, He did not say fellowship with God, or glory, or peace, or joy (though all these things are included. Isa. 35:1,2,10; 65:18,19; 25:8; Rev. 21:4), but life – life, without which none of the others would ever be. Over and over again is this precious truth repeated in scriptures such as these: Matt. 7:14; 19:17,29; 25:46; Mark 10:30; John 3:16; 4:14; 5:29,40; 10:10, 28; 11:25, 26; Rom. 2:7; 6:23; Gal. 6:8; 1 Tim. 6:12; James 1:12; 1 John 2:25; Rev. 2:10.

The promise of God to Abraham (Gen. 17:8) was an inheritance of the land. Since he has never yet received it (Acts 7:5) he must first receive everlasting life. Christians, sharing Abraham’s inheritance (Gal. 3:29), shall also be recompensed in the earth. Prov.11:31; Psa. 37:9, 11, 22, 29; Matt. 5:5; Rev. 5:10. They shall reign with Christ in his kingdom (Matt. 19:28; Luke 22:29, 30; Rev. 2:26, 27; 3:21; 20:4-6), which is not in heaven, but will be on earth at His coming. Psa. 2:8; 115:16; Isa. 9:6, 7; Jer. 23:5; Dan. 2:44; 7:13, 14, 18, 27; Zech 14:9; Luke 1:32, 33; Rev. 11:15.

Then shall the earth be made new (Isa. 65:17-25) and become the eternal home of the righteous. In bodies (not souls) of glorious immortality (Isa. 35:5, 6; Phil. 3:21; Rom. 8:11, 23) they shall ever manifest God’s transcendent gift (Rom. 6:32) of LIFE.

If you think that Heaven is your reward, then you will have missed the boat, since the Kingdom of God will be set upon the earth.

All I know is, I trust in Jesus and I believe he is who his word says he is.........

Are you sure you know what TRUST means?

Jesus says he who does NOT believe him is CONDEMNED already (John 3:18). Jesus says he is a MAN (John 8:40) and the Father is the ONLY true God (John 17:3). Do you BELIEVE that Jesus is the SON of God?
