As the 200-nation Bali conference wrangled over a minor procedural matter, the Dutch diplomat in charge of the talks burst into tears and had to be led away by colleagues . . .

Mr de Boer, distinctively dressed in a floral shirt, stepped up to the microphone to defend his staff - only to find that the words would no longer come . . .

"He wasn't just wiping his eyes, he was in floods of tears," said one observer.

"Three colleagues - one of them a woman - formed a protective group around him and escorted him out of the hall. It was all very dramatic." . . .

Check out the sidelong glance from the guy next to him.

Priceless. The Asian guy is wearing a western business suit. Very professional The guy from the west looks like he stepped off the album cover of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and is crying.

Guess that shirt is Javanese. But I image a person from Holland wearing it to an Asian business meeting would be comparable to an Asian showing up at a business conference in Amsterdam with wooden shoes and a little Dutch boy outfit.

Good one Voegelin.
Or if the conference were in Africa maybe he would have shown up in black face.
Just kidding. I don't think he's being patronizing, just being Dutch.

Me neither. He was just in the spirit of things. I've worn a lavalava myself. Wouldn't wear one to a political/business meeting deciding the fate of the world but thats just me I guess.

Wouldn't you like to know what the Communist Chinese said to each other after his reaction to their comments?

Argh, I think I was trying to say "brouille" although the meaning I was trying to convey is choppy, uneven and discordant. (Lack of harmony.) I see various English translations like argument and scrambled. Unfortunately I loosely use this term to mean retro and vintage-cheap just to confuse French and English people alike.

The Dutch seem like such a stable, balanced people. It's hard to believe Mr. de Boer is intrinsically disordered.

These comments brought to you by ING. At ING we make a point to prove to clients that the Dutch aren't intrinsically disordered. This is despite the fact we wear wooden shoes.

I'm just kidding about that. I wouldn't have made it to school without my line of credit at ING.

I'm glad Mr. de Boer is so encourged by their accomplishments in Bali. He obviously feels very strongly about these issues. And although a man I have certainly done my share of crying. I've never worn a shirt like that, though.
