Hi,

I have been working on my family tree. It has been fun. I've only gone back two generations but I have learned a lot about my family.

I am 3/4 Czechoslovakian (had to learn how to spell it :) and 1/4 Austrian.

There was a story in my family that my great grandmother's ship that was coming to America from Czechoslovakia picked up surviovirs from the Titanic. I have been trying to verify this story. I did find her ship manifest from the ellisisland records website and verified that the year she came matches the year the Titanic sank. I do not know how else to verify this story.

I did a search with my family name and stumbled upon a family surname message board and to my surprise found someone who I was distantly related too and had a lot of information on my family.

Anyhow...What nationality are you? Have any of you searched your roots?

Got any good stories. (I love stories) :)

God Bless,
Roberta

I have been trying to trace my geneaology for a while now.

It seems I am like a Heinz 57 mix. ;)

The most prominent ancestry is Irish, Scottish and English.

My last name is Dunn. I have found some information, including my family's Crest and motto from Ireland.
That was pretty cool!

I was told that my paternal great-grandfather was half Comanche. My aunts had spent years trying to verify it, but so far they havent been able to.

My dad's side brings: Irish, German, Native American(?) and French.

My mom's side brings: Scottish and English.

I think it is neat when we look at what different heritages combine to make our families up.

I'm part German, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, and something else I can never remember.

I don't know a whole lot about my family history. But I do know 2 of my great-grandparents (my mom's mom's parents) both came over from Ireland...and their names are on the wall at Ellis Island. Great-grandma's last name was Steenson and great-grandpa's name was Kerr. :)

My 17th paternal grandfather, Thomas Lumos lived and died in Essex county, England, 1486. He was a wool merchant believed to be the family business for many generations before him.

The area his family was located in was the target of migration from Jews from Spain in the 800-1100s who were merchants, the least of which were wool (clothing merchants). Our family probably were that way for about a hundred years prior to exile from Spain.

Thomas Lumos is a 'Christian' name. Probably indicating our family's decision to convert to Catholicism in order to save their business when Jews were expelled from England in the 1300s.

It is believed our last name was a derivitve from Spanish and Latin meaning "light" or the name of our family's heritage: candle or lamp makers.

Combining these two pieces of evidence has led our family to believe we are decended quite possibly from wool-trading or lamp-making Jews dispersed to Spain by Nebuchadnezzar and our family's 'geneological' trade was that of making lamps or menorahs for special religious occasions.

The Jews dispersed by Nebuchadnezzar were those exiled from the Southern Kingdom - Judah, made up of the two remaining tribes after the Northern Kingdom of Israel was destroyed: Judah and Benjamin.

Religous lamp/menorah makers were almost always likely from the tribe of Judah.

If we really want to speculate, the first menorah maker commissioned by Moses is in the bible and he just happens to be... a Judahite - Belthezzar or something. :) If this is true, then Belthezzar's direct lineage is traced straight back to Adam. :p

liafail - I'd be interested t know how you've worked out your ancestory goes back to the tribe of Benjamin.....

I guess this thread is mainly directed at my American friends (being a relatively young coutry with people of diverse origins) as people from most other counries have a relatively stable ancestory.

For myself, my mother and her family line are all Welsh, my father and his known ancestors were English.

My surname originates from Denmark (so I'm told)....

Many blessings....

Martin, I had never really thought of that before. :)

I guess there was a price that was paid by our ancestors for leaving their countries and coming here to America.

I have seen where the traditions from the countries are kept alive and passed down to each generation so they wont forget.
I just wish my family had done something like that.

I have enjoyed all of your posts. :)

I had not thought of that either Martin.... but if you are from another country you can still tell us about your family. :)

The problem I am running into is once these people came to Ellis Island their names were changed.

Another problem is that prior to 1900 Czechoslavakia was not a country.

My grandfather told me that his mother who came from Czechoslavakia wanted to come to America so she could freely practice her religion and read her bible. She came from a Communist country.

Ellis Island has a good website if anyone is interested.

God Bless,
Roberta

My sister and I are the Original Heinz 57 in our family. My Mother broke rank I guess you can say. When tracing my family and their history all you will find on my Mom's side is Sicilians. (Southern Italians) My mom fell in Love with an Irish/Scottish Man. So we are the Heinz 57 of our family. We still have family in Italy, My Mother's Mom's family were pioneers of Colorado they found the Spanish peaks, or Twin Peaks in Southern Colorado.

As for my fathers side of the family, I have the family bible goes back 6 generations, talk about different, the coolest part is the bible is not in the same order that we are familiar with. I charish it.

Be Blessed.

welll.....dad's family is scottish on both sides though American :)

my Grandfather is a Reid clan Robertson
My Grandmother is a Morgan...same clan as Mary Queen of Scots and Sir Captain Henry Morgan...english privateer..pirate knighted for helping his cousin Queen Elizabeth kill one of his rival pirates..and yes the Rum is reputed to be named after him.

My mother is a little bit different....

Her Grandmother came over as a young girl from Equies, Italy..her last name was Equi (which I find funny as the females on this side of the family tend to be a little horse nutty..see avitar)
So on that side I am only 3rd generation American :), Mom's Dad however is Irish....Nowlin we know a little of this side of the family. 3 brothers came over each recieved a different spelling of the last name and they settled in different parts of the country.

I know more of my Great grandmothers husband and her self but it is where it gets really confusing lol, we are still trying to figure out how Great Grandma's Mother got from Germany to Italy
