The evergetinos

On the mystical life, St. Symeon the new theologian (SVS press)

In the night of the desert of the holy mountain

On the prayer of Jesus by Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov

Saint Silouan, the Athonite by Archimandrite Sophrony

These are what I would call "neptic" writings. They span the ancient past to the present day, and show the constancy of the faith throughou the centuries.

I have it, but have only browsed it (its a TimeLife publication). It would need to be compared with more exhaustive treatments on the subject -- as I don't have these (Ostogorsky, Pelikan and ? whose name I can't remember offhand ). So I'll reserve judgement; maybe by now a critical assessment can be found online ...

As for the rest of Sherrard's books (other than history), I think they would need to be read with the help of someone with a deeper knowledge of theology (ex., The Sacred in Life and Art, Human Image, World Image, The R--- of Man and Nature) I liked these books, but anotherwords, they should not be read as a position that necessarily reflects the "mind of the Church".

(BTW, one of the links on this thread includes several online chapters of The Mind of the Church, by Metr. Hierotheos Vlachos; all of his books are excellent).

Ostogorsky,
It is spelled Ostrogorsky and the name of the book is "Byzantine State"
Also Ranciman "Byzantine Style and Civilization"

never heard of him... I could swear that the most "lazy" theologians are the ethicists and the dogmaticians....We got just very few Orthodox... I guess it is a tough subject to deal with.

the "Byzantine theology" by Meyendorff seems to deal good with basic dogma and explanation.

For crusades I am not sure but look up either Pellikan, Ranciman, we used Pellikan publicatons for our church history they were pretty "objective" (early ninties editions....maybe they changed them now) about church history

I just finished Pomazansky and found it to be an incredibly accessible systematic theology (of sorts). Very readable. I really enjoyed it.
