• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Something to consider:

" Too much talk on women's body image, stripped of men's body image, causes more problems than saying nothing. "

It's a quote from a friend who holds two PhD's. We'll leave her name out.

What she's saying here is that so much talk of women's body image CAUSES body image problems in women. When, as is the case in our culture, there is no talk of men's body image, the situation becomes worse, more severe.

What do you think?
-------
I think she has an important point! Our society is scaring our women half to death with over-talk of female problems and gross under-talk of male problems. The two factors taken together cause more problems than if we said nothing at all.

The OP quotes a doctor: "Too much talk on women's body image, stripped of men's body image, causes more problems than saying nothing."

This seems simplistic to me.

Women are MUCH more interested in their body image than the average man.
Therefore, women talk about their body image more often.
And, men rarely, if ever, discuss their body image (because they don't care about it).

This quote seems to PUSH men into discussion of body image.
This is silly.
Why should I want to discuss something I don't see as an issue?

There are MANY subjects that women discuss ... which men think are un-important (or stupid).

How many women would want to start getting into heavy discussions about Football stats?

Each sex has its own subjects to discuss.
Just because a lot of women discuss their body image, doesn't make it un-fair for men to ignore it.

What you are doing here is assuming that the cultural view of who males & females are is the correct view: It is not, that is not in dispute among the experts. It is relative numbers only that is in dispute.

So, what we're doing is scaring the females half to death and teaching males who have a big problems that they do not have a problem: Not exactly the brightest thing to do!

For example, my seven year old grand-daughter already thinks she 'must' have a body image problem: She does not. While the kid who lives two doors down and spends six hours a day at the gym believes he does not have a problem: He does and it is killing him.

yes, we can all find individuals that do or don't ahve issues with their body image I suppose. So those individuals have to each deal witht their situation.

To me the important thing is to deal in reality and figure out what is healthy for them. I had no weigh issues till I got to be 40ish. Now I have to watch or I'll add weigh since my motabalism has slowed down. Very common as one gets older. But its a minor thing for me.

know ourselves and deal with it.
