The jury also awarded $1.1 million to Donna Summers, a former McDonald's assistant store manager who also sued the fast-food chain. Summers, who had asked the jury to award her $50 million, led the strip search of Ogborn at the direction of the hoax caller.

This part of the judgment was a horrible decision.

I agree!

First of all, I don't understand why McDonald's should be considered responsible for this woman's stupidity.

Second, no one could possibly be as dumb as this woman. She should be in jail, not enjoying a million dollars.

She's not the only one; according to the video provided on the 20/20 link, a lot of people from other fast-food restaurants were fooled as well. I do agree that she should never have received any compensation.

The strip search prank call scam was a series of incidents occurring for roughly a decade before 2004. These incidents involved a man calling a restaurant, claiming to be a police detective, and convincing managers to conduct strip-searches of female employees. Reports of over 70 such occurrences in 30 U.S. states finally led to the arrest and charging of David R. Stewart, a 37-year-old Florida corrections officer.
On October 31, 2006, Stewart was acquitted of all charges stemming from that arrest, including impersonating a police officer, soliciting sodomy and soliciting sexual abuse. The incident for which he was charged took place at a Louisville, Kentucky-area McDonald's in 2004. This is the only such incident in which Stewart has been prosecuted.

Apparently, the Florida man was acquitted of the charges against him.

Somehow she got a jury that's more stupid than her.

Um, why did the woman stupid enough to do this get any money at all?

She should have been put in prison as an accessory.
Exactly.

One thing I'm not clear on. An article I read mentions that a male employee was asked in to watch the victim. When the caller instructed him to perform sexual acts on the victim, he walked out of the room in disgust.

But the article doesn't say what he did after that. Did he alert anybody, or did he just go right back to his job, knowing that a naked coworker was being abused in the back?

I read that it was he who called the police.

He should get the million.

It should be criminal to be this gullable.

The victim and everyone involved believed the phone call to be real. SO why should McDonalds pay?
Obviously, the reasonable people in the store believed the caller to be police.

If any of the people involved knew thier rights, they would have known that none of what the caller was saying was legal. And being that the police was not there in person, meant it was a hoax.
But how many people being fooled makes it obvious that the average citizen would have complied?

And how does McDonalds train their employees, where the school system failed? And why pay gross ignorance by all involved, to the victims? And why punish a company for believing their employees to have fundamental understanding of human rights.

From what I saw on tv, it was the managers boyfriend who got a call to come in to the McDonald's and watch the accused employee and then sexually assault her.

These people are so dumb. It's really sad. But I don't think that McDonald's should've been held responsible.
