Don't open it! It may be a screen saver, but it may contain malicious code, too. The filename itself proves that it is trying to disguise itself as a document, hoping you don't catch on to the fact that it really ends in ".scr"

If you're really curious, contact whoever sent it to you and ask them what it is. If they don't recall sending you any files, delete it NOW.

That is VERY much a virus.

Look at the filename.

"envelope.doc.scr"

Notice that it's .doc.scr

It looks like the person is trying to make it look like a word document. It has to have .scr at the end of Windows will try to open it with Word...

If I see a file named two things like that, I am automatically suspicious ;)

Might want to forward it to Norton or Semantic, or one of those anti-virus companies so they can see if it is a new virus? Of course, tell them you are going to do that before you do, in case there are some procedures that must be followed. You dont want to end up infecting them!

I receive hundreds of virus's every month in my customer service inbox at work (we don't always know every customer's email address so can't guage by that). Our policy is not to open any attachments that are not described in the body of the email from someone with a legitimate reason for sending it, such as "I am sending an Excel spreasheet of my system usage for audit" or something.

I never open jokes or anything without checking with the sender....even from people I know because many viruses send legit email addresses.

ifriit is right.

Most 'viruses' these days are written simply to spread themselves, and to shut down virus scanners and other programs. For example, Klez.H was the fastest spreading virus ever, or something like that. I think it was Klez anyway. But yeah... Look out for emails coming with attachments with extensions including (but not limited to)

.PIF
.SCR
.EXE
.COM
.BAT
.VBS (Visual Basic Script, used by script kiddies who think they're good)

Also, double extensions (such as .jpg.vbs) are obviously dodgy.

I'll have a look around and try to find information at www.norman.com on whatever that envelope.doc.scr file/virus comes from and what it does...

Also, if anyone here has ever gotten an email with 'worms.exe' as the attachment, and run the file, you have a virus ;). Just let me know if you want to know how to get rid of it.

Umm, no. There is no such thing as an "anonymous" email address--the closest thing was shut down ages ago. Most likely, a spoofed email address header was generated, with faked email addresses in it.

Yeah i know, i mean't spoofed email address sorry. :)

Pick up Norton's anti-virus and it will catch these files if you mistakenly open them. It is well worth the money and I highly recommend it.

God bless
